Davis Globe Staff There as a sense of loss in State st. board rooms and South End flophouses alike yesterday as the news spread: "Sam is dead." Rev. Samuel Tyler assistant minister at Trinity Episcopal Church, Copley died unexpectedly yesterday morning at his home in Wellesley Hills. He was 56 and had been at Trinity since 1946.

What he did was unique and it was almost impossible to get him to talk about it," said Rev. Theodore P. Ferris, rector of Trinity Church. A tall, quiet, bespectacled man. Rev.

Mr. Tyler preferred a battered felt hat, old raincoat and tennis shoes to conventional clerical dress, and shunned the "He had very' deep concern for people in trouble, the rich and poor alike," said Right Rev. John M. Burgess, bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts, "all levels of society are mourning his loss." All those who knew Rev. Mr.

Tyler agree that his was a very personal ministry. "A city church has to have someone who is out in the city that was Sam," Rev. Mr. Ferris said, "it was difficult for him to blow his own horn but every social agency in the city could tell you about, him." Said one acquaintance yesterday: "An awful lot of invisible people are going to miss him." The "invisible people" included convicts, alcoholics, drug addicts, and fatherless children. "I must have worked with him on 10 to 20 committees since 1948," said Daniel J.

Finn, Boston Housing Authority administrator, "he was one of the most unusual men I've ever met." "If there was any one person who really represented progress in this city it was Sam," Finn said, "he was always a pioneer, the one who would stay with it and drive and show that it could be done." Some of the programs that Rev. Mr. Tyler was the prime force in starting are the Boston Big Brother program, the South End Low Cost Housing Program, and Brook House, a half-way house for ex-convicts. "Those are living monuments to Sam Tyler," Finn said. Rev.

Mr. Tyler was born in Cincinnati, the son of the late Rev. Samuel Tyler and Alice a (Smethurst) Tyler, now of Cambridge. He graduated from St. George's School, Newport, R.I.

in 1932, and from Princeton University in 1936. After serving as a lay missionary in Liberia, enrolled in the Episcopal Theological School. Cambridge, receiving his bachelor of divinity degree in 1942. That year he was ordained deacon in the Epis- ARRIVED African Moan. West Africa, caifo.

TYLER in 1947 copal Church by Bishop Henry Knox Sherrill and a priest by Bishop William Scarlett. Bishop Scarlett's belief in "the social gospel" greatly influenced Rev. Mr. Tyler's own ministry. He was a canon at Christ Church Cathedral, St.

Louis, Mo. until 1943, when he entered the Army as a chaplain, serving until 1946. Rev. Mr. Tyler was with the 100th Infantry during the North African and European campaigns and served briefly in the Pacific after the war ended in Europe.

He was proud of his association with the 100th Division and was active in the local chapter of the unit's veterans' association. James A. Keddie of Swampscott, a Globe editor, served with the 100th Division in France. "The first time I saw Sam Tyler he was coming into a battalion aid station with a load of wounded in his Jeep," Keddie said, "he wouldn't stay back he was always up with the frontline infantry troops." Rev. Mr.

Tyler received two bronze stars, the Valor Medal and Oak Cluster, and Purple Heart among other military awards. After his discharge, he served as chaplain of the Massachusetts National Guard for 10 years. Immediately after World War II, when he joined the Trinity Church staff, he helped establish a refugee center for displaced persons in the Central Massachusetts village of Bald-winville. As chairman of the New England Resettlement Committee, he was instrumental in caring for some 1200 displaced persons from Central and Western Europe. In addition to his mother.

Rev. Mr. Tyler leaves his wife, Jane (Yeomans) Tyler, whom he married in 1941; two sons, Samuel Tyler 3d of Weston and John H. Y. Perhaps we should draw the same distinction in bridge. Certainly, when today's hand was played South was a gentleman of considerable dignity, but nobody would make the mistake of calling him a bridge player. He knew exactly what to do next because he had learned the lesson at his mother's knee, which was not the kind of joint in which you really learned how to play. Declarer led a trump from dummy with assurance and aplomb, but with no success.

The defenders took their two trumps and their two spades, and took his beating. It was all very decorous, but it was enough to make a bridge player cry. OBVIOUS PLAY South has an obvious play for his contract if he is not obsessed with the notion that declarer is morally bound to lead trumps at his first opportunity. Declarer should take the ace of diamonds, at the second trick and then over? take the queen of diamonds with dummy's king. If nobody ruffs the first or second diamond, South is virtually home.

He leads the jack of diamonds from dummy to discard one of the losing spades. If nobody ruffs. South can safely lead trumps. The defenders will get two trumps but only one spade. Even if one of the opponents has only two diamonds, he may not gain by ruffing the third diamond.

He may have to ruff with the ace or king of trumps, in which case his side will still get only two trumps and one spade. Even if a defender manages to ruff the third diamond with the missing low trump, the ace and king of trumps may then fall together on the same trick. 7:00 4 All-Americen Collage Show 7 One More Time 9 Zane Grey Theater 10 Death Valley Days (e) The Boston Globe Scholastic Art Exhibition 12 Truth or Consequences Sat ow; 3 Roger Mudd; news (c) 50 John Gary Show 54 Star Trek 4- 10 Andy Williams Show (c) 5- 12 Jackie Gloason Show (c) Court docket 7:30 Of- MASSACHUSETTS SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS' ART WORK 4-7-9 Let's Make a Deal (c) 3S Suspente Theatre (c) 1:00 guest (e) 7 News, weether (c) Movie: Humphrey Bogert, Ingrid Bergman, Paul Henreid 54 Movie: "Pearl of Death," Basil Rath bone, Nigel Iruco News (e) 7 Movies: "Toys In the Attic."
