In a slnn of two well known tales hv Robert Ixijls Stevenson, keep your eye on the acting talents of derail Tievoi- Howard, who, according to The Olob- cm "inampulatc a Pinch of precious diamond out of the museum in a dull sequence. After that it is a matter of chasing down the elusive diamond, which ends up, at various times, inside one of the robbers, in a police station and in a safety deposit box. There is considerable action a break into a prison to release a prisoner and a helicopter rooftop assault on a police station. But, as we said, nothing really works. Zero Mostel appears as the sleazy lawyer-father of one of the crooks.

Better luck next time, boys. By George McKinnon Globe Staff "The Hot Rock," the new film at the Cheri Theater Complex is being plugged as a "comedy-misadventure." Well, that is certainly half right. It is indeed a misadventure for all concerned, but they are wrong about the comedy part since it is a flat, dull, inept movie. When you consider the talents involved, two of the screen's best actors, Robert Redford and George Segal, and director Peter Yates and screenplay writer William ('Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Goldman, you wonder why it all went so badly amiss. It's supposed to be a comedy about four inept thieves and the heist of a priceless diamond from the Brooklyn Museum.

But nothing seems to work. What was undoubtedly envisioned as a quick-paced caper comes across as silly and stupid. And some of the terrible "humor" lines and sight gags elict silence rather than laughter. The picture was filmed on location in the New York city area, but Yates, who so beautifully captured San Francisco In "Bullitt," might as well have been shooting in Des Moines for all the feeling he has for New York. Let him view "The French Connection" and "Made for Each Other" to see how one should film New York.

Well, to be brief, Red-ford plays an ex-convict who joins up with a lock expert (George Segal) and two cohorts (Ron Liebman and Paul Sand), and the quartet manages to get the fniin with superbly usual nonchalance.
