"We flew over the area regularly for two years and ran it on snqwsleds," Dunn said. "The animals were never sighted." Dunn is unable to explain what went wrong. Previous research indicated the animals would gather on common ground and breed.

Dunn figured on a half-dozen to 10 young calves each year. "Our study showed that the caribou should have pursued a pattern of regrouping," Dunn said. "But it never happened." Instead, the animals placed on Katah-din's northeast plateau took off in all directions helter-skelter style, and never got together for breeding.
