French, 38, of Everett and Grieco, 51, of Peabody are on trial before Judge Felix Forte and 16 jurors in Suffolk Superior Court on charges of first degree murder. Four other defednants are accused as accessories before the fact of murder, a capital crime.

They are Peter Li-mone, 33, of Medford; Ron-eld Cassesso, 35, of Somer-ville; Joseph (Joe the Horse) Salvati, 36, of the North end, and Henry Tam-eleo, 66, of Cranston, R.I. Limone and Tamaleo were named betore a Senate investigating subcommittee as ranking member of the New England branch of the Cosa Nostra. Stathopoulos has been under police protective custody since last September after claims of repeated attempts on his life.
