54 The Boston Globe Thursday, May 23, 1968 O's 2-Run HR in Ninth Off Wyatt Tops Yanks V. V.itMWM&tfto United Prest Internrntlontl NEW YORK Pinch-hitter Don Buford spoiled John Wyatt's first appearance in a New York uniform Wednesday night by tagging him for a two-run homer in the ninth inning to carry the Orioles to a 4-3 victory over the Yankees. Buford, batting for shortstop Mark Belanger, lined his first homer into the right field seats after Dave Johnson walked leading off the ninth inning. The blow pinned the defeat on Wyatt, who came on after Bill Monboquette, who allowed seven hits and two runs in seven innings, was lifted for a pinch-hitter. The victory went to Moe Dra-bowsky, the third Oriole pitcher who went the final three innings and held the Yankees hitless.

The Yankees wiped out a deficit and took the 3-2 lead they held until Buford's blow, by scoring three runs off starter Tom Phoebus in the fourth inning with the help of shaky fielding by the crippled Baltimore outfield. With Frank Robinson unable to throw because of a shoulder injury, the Oriole.s moved him from right to left and put Dave May in right and that alignment almost cost the Orioles the game. Mickey Mantle led off the fourth with a double and scored on Andy Kosco's double. May then misplayed Tom Tresh's pop fly into a double and Kosco, who had to wait to see if the ball would be caught, moved to third on the play. Bobby Cox grounded a hard two-out single to left to score both runners.

Robinson, who normally might have cut down Tresh. at home, had to concede the run and flip the ball to second base. Brooks Robinson homered off Monbouquette in the first inning and the Orioles scored an unearned run in the third on a single by Mark Belanger, an error by second baseman Horace Clarke and an infield out. 2.40. A 10,281. 1 Epstein Optioned To Minors Associated Press WASHINGTON Mike Epstein, the big slugger whose refusal to report to the minor leagues last year forced Baltimore to trade him to Washington, was sent to the Senators' Buffalo farm club Wednesday. The 230-pound first baseman was hitting only .099 this season and had struck out 26 times in 91 times at bat. At one point this season, he was hitting only .086.

Epstein was selected as the Minor League Player of the Year by the Sporting News in 1966 after leading the International League with 29 homers, 109 runs batted in and a .309 batting average with Rochester. When tne Orioles tried to send him back to the minors last year; Epstein began a celebrated holdout and went home to California, refusing to report. Finally the Orioles traded him to the Senators with pitcher Frank Bertaina for pitcher Pete Richert. Orioles Blair.
