March SO. The trouble growing out ol tne eiecuon oi wu of Samoa has taken a very nou turn, and resulted in a bombardment of native villages, along the shore by the United States cruiser rmiaaeipwa. Admiral Kautx commanding, and the British cruisers Porpoise and Koyansu The bombardment has continued inter- mltt.ntlv for eight days. Several vu lages has been burned, and there have been a number of casualties antoni the America and British sailors and marines. As yet It Is Impossible- to, estimate the number of natives knea or injured.

Admiral Kautx summoned the various consuls and the senior naval officers to a conference on board the fniia- defphla, when the whole situation carefully canvassed. The upshot was a resolution to dismiss the provisional government and Admiral Katrtx lssuej a proclamation calling upon iiataafa and his chiefs to return to their homes. Mataafa went into the interior, and the German consul, Herr issued another Droclamatlon upholding; ata taafa. Mataafa grew bold at this and showed fight with the result that the towns were bombarded.

Berlin. March SO. A brief official despatch from Apia, Samoa, dated March 20, says: "The bombardment continues. In pursuance to military orders the whites have evacuated many houses. The chiefs of the Tan us party who were exiled to other islands, have been brought back from Upolu.

The firearms and ammunition taken from Tanus on January 2 have been return-ed." Washington. March' SO. The postal department proposes to tjee reindeer to carry the mails in Alaska and it is for the purpose of securing the proper breed of these animals that the Thetis has been sent to the Arctic. In respect to the recommendations made by Major-General Hutton in his annua) report, it is understood that they are entirely the views of the general himself and they have not as yet been adopted by he. minister or the department. There is nothing settled regarding them. Home of the suggestions made will no doubt be carriei out, while others are not likely to materialize.

San Francisco, March 30 Fur-bearing seals have been unsually plentiful oil the California coast during the past winter. The British sealer Uene'va put into Monterey after a cruise of a little over two months off here with L243 skins. The British schooner Mermaid sailed from Victoria with the Geneva, and she was reported as having bad good luck. The Zllla May and Diana silled from Victoria about a month and three weeks after they were Out they bad an average of 100 skins each. From all reports recently received the fleet of sealers is heading for Fort Ross, where they will provision and fit out for cruises in the Behr-tag Sea.

Aylen added that In return for the extension of charter the Metropolitan Company would give the city the right (at the end of ten years) of purchasing their entire plant, which would include the power bouse and water power at Britannia. The com-letby would also be prepared to make anSoffer whereby at the end of ten years they iwould supply the city with street Mghts under an arrangement that would be highly advantageous to the corporation. Culbert, Liberal. Mr. Comstock has already made two good runs in' this, one of the Con servative, strongholds, and it is thought that be' will be an easy winner this time. On the other hand Mr. Culbert Is a strong Conservative, well known in the riding, and a capable man.

Both parties are bard at work preparing for' the contest. The Liberals will hold a convention shortly for the purpose of selecting their candidate. -u SUNDAY CAR BILL PASSED SOME AMENDMENTS WERE MADE TO IT. The Bill Will not be Exempt From Future Amendment to the Lord's Day Act 1 Toronto, 'March SO. Ottawa's Sunday car bill passed the legislature last night with a couple of amendments.

Through Hon. Mr. Gibson a clause was inserted providing that no exception shall be made by this bill in connection with ths corporation's authority to run street cars on Sunday that shall exempt it from aqy future amendment of the Lord's Day Act. ThC was also added another clause, to tins effect "that street railway employees must receive extra pay when they work more than six days a week. There is a clause permitting the running ot the cars in certain suburbs of Ottawa at each end of the line.

The premier's bill in regard to protesting elections was passed in committee with slight changes. It provides that election petitions shall be filed only by the candidate or three electors rated for $1,000 real property. The premier said the object waa to prevent filing of petitions 'on Insufficient evidence. Electrio light consumers are respectfully reminded to save the discount by paying March (meter) lighting accounts on or before April 1st, 1801. Office open till 9 p.m.
