Of course, the big ratings story yesterday was the overnight Hooper figure of 39.4, equal to 79 percent of the viewing audience, for the Super Bowl match. That figures out to over 60 million watchers, "the largest ever to watch a televised sporting event," in the words of NBC.

ABC will interrupt the all-star N.B.A. basketball game at 9 o'clock to pick up President Johnson's State of the Union address, then return to the action when the speech is over. From past performances, sports devotees aren't going to take the loss of such a big chunk of action lying down.

CBS will also have to interrupt programing in mid-show to carry the President. The "Red Skelton Hour" will be cut down the middle and the last half of the show will go out the window. Whether the "Doris Day Show" goes on depends on how long Mr. Johnson talks. Only NBC has been able to work in the speech without disruption.

All it did was preempt the two-hour rerun movie, "The Miracle Worker," to run the speech in to be followed by an evaluation of the Johnson years, which will fill out the 120 minutes. and maintained the high standard set from the outset. "To Love a Child," a slice-of-life look at a Yonkers couple's efforts to adopt a baby finally rewarded with a handsome, bouncing, blue-eyed boy had a built-in warmth and appeal that overcame some repetitive, prosaic passages. The mother was emotional, the father sturdy, and they made an attractive photogenic duo. "Killy Le Champion" followed the French ski whiz through an hour of exploits and wanderlust in a shifting panorama that carried him from the realities and challenges of the slope to the glamour and make-believe of Hollywood.

There were not enough good skiing shots and too much fooling around that eventually wore out even the armchair viewer and his vicarious association with the hero. "Cosmopolis," the second of three examinations of "Man and His Universe," was yet another look at big-city headaches around the world that zeroed In on the lack of regional planning in this country and bemused us with models of grandiose projects (all too expensive), It sounded rather remote, though the realities are ur- gent and the need for action is strong. Well, this is one viewing habit to be discouraged, because four in a row are too much for one sitting, and that was perhaps why they seemed to carry viewing impact in inverse ratio. The first one, Jacques Yves Cousteau's "The Unexpected Voyage of Pepito and Cristobal," was a delight to the eye and sensibilities as it depicted the care and training of two baby seals aboard the exploration ship Calypso.

She appeared on his special earlier this Fall. He has had three other exchange pacts in his 14 years with NEC, but all were with NBC personalities, Bob Hope, Dinah Shore and Danny Thomas. This is his first with a CBS star and it is his first appearance on that network since he left it in 1954. His contract with NBC has a year and a half to go, but all that is provided in it at the moment is his emceeing of a sports award show next month and another special next season. The future of the NBC-Como liaison is very uncertain.

The Nielsen ratings were back in the picture yesterday after a "dark" week and they returned CBS to the peak by a narrow margin for the week ending Jan. 5 after some weeks of running second. The score was 21.1 for CBS, 20.7 for NBC, 16.1 for ABC. It was a good week for family and rustic comedy with ''Gomer Pyle" first, "Family Affair" third, "May-berry R.F.D." fourth, "Bewitched" sixth, and "My Three Sons" ninth. NBC had "Martin and Rowan's Laugh-In" second and "Bonanza" fifth.

The ABC topliner was "Bewitched." The movie showcases made a partial comeback with the NBC Saturday movie seventh and the CBS Friday movie eighth.
