"There was a loud noise," French said, "and I don't know whether I bumped into Teddy or we tangled feet, but I fell." He dropped to the courtroom floor in front of the jury, and with a crablike stride, his weight on his fingertips and toes, hurried across the room to show how he moved out of the alley. 1 indictments against seven finance companies and eight individuals in the so-called small loans cases have been dropped by Atty. Gen. Elliot L. Richardson and will not be brought to trial, records in Suffolk Superior Court disclosed Wednesday. The attorney general's office, with the approval of Judge Francis J.

Quirico and the assent of the defendants named in the indictments, placed on file all the remaining indictments obtained as a result of the 1964 crime commission investigation into alleged bribery in connection with small loan rates. In placing the indictments on file, Asst. Atty. Gen. Richard E.

Bachman, one of the prosecutors in the small loans case already given court trials told the court that dropping the remaining indictments would "best serve the ends of justice." Two small loans trials already have been held resulting in convictions of several loan companies, officials of those firms, and former Deputy Bank Comr. Martin J. Hanley. The first of the trials lasted five months and the second 11 months establishing a record for length of a criminal trial in the state. Richardson's action in declining to continue prosecution of the remaining indictments left one finance company, Seaboard Finance Company of Los Angeles, cleared of the charges without having been brought into either of the trials already held. Also dropped were remaining indictments against Hanley's Beneficial Finance Company, Household Finance Corporation, State Loan and Finance Corporation, and officials of those companies. v2) jj BS FRAMINGHAM SO.
