PAGELABELTAG THE PALM BEACH POST REAL NEWS STARTS HERE I FRIDAY, APRIL 15, 2016 B5 LAKE WORTH Pastor set to take over Bamboo Room club Church will add service, but music also will continue. By Kevin D.Thompson Palm Beach Post Staff Writer LAKE WORTH God works in mysterious ways. Take The Bamboo Room, for instance. Common Ground Church Pastor Mike Olive is poised to take over running the famed and troubled nightclub on South Street just a year after the new owners paid $710,000 to buy the building, another $130,000 for a liquor license and an additional $60,000 to add value to the property. "This will be a great venue for the entire community," Olive said.

The proposed deal, which would start May 1, is for Olive to lease the space on the second floor of the Paradise Building at 25 South St. with a first right of refusal to buy from owners Ryan Mueller of RJM Real Estate in Delray Beach, finance industry veteran Blaine Minton and one silent partner. The property, built in 1922, is on the market for lease or for sale for $1.5 million. Olive declined to disclose the terms of the deal, saying the details are still being ironed out. Mueller stressed nothing is final.

"Right now it's still in dis- Thursday night comedy show as well as yoga and Zumba classes. Olive also plans to add a juice bar and a co-op vegan kitchen. Summer camps and music lessons could be in the works down the road. "The Bamboo Room is a nightclub, but not much happens during the day," Olive said. "We're trying to fill that up." Olive said he met with Mayor Pam Triolo, City Manager Michael Bornstein and Community Sustainability Director William Waters about a month ago to discuss his plans to lease the building and take over the club.

Olive has had a few run-ins with Lake Worth officials. Last year, the city said he needed a special permit to hold church services at a coffee shop. Bornstein told The Palm Beach Post this past October there was a "dust-up" that was politicized and generated some confusion. At the time, Olive had said it appeared churches were being singled out and said the city wasn't tolerant of Christians living a public life downtown. "All those problems are behind us now," Olive said last year.

Commissioner Andy Amoroso, who runs Studio 205 and Java Juice Bar on Lake Avenue, has been critical of Olive in the past. "He's catering to sober For 17 years, the Bamboo Room on South Street has been tried to sustain live musical entertainment, bruce r. bennett in and out of business as it the palm beach post 'This will be a great venue for the entire community We're staying true to the club's Mike Olive Pastor, Common Ground Church said. "We had our fun, now it's time to let somebody else run it." If he gets the club, Olive said he plans to work closely with the owners because they still own the building and have more experience running a nightclub. To allay community fears, Olive said The Bamboo Room cussions and we're talking about it," Mueller said.

"We're close, but until it's in writing, it means nothing." As for why Mueller and his partners want to sell or lease the Bamboo Room, Mueller said the property was purchased as an investment. "We had no intention of being there long-term," he BOATING TRAGEDY Pastor Mike Olive of the Common Ground Church said he'stryingto add more day activities to the Lake Worth club, contributed homes," Amoroso said. "I don't have a problem with him bringing in busloads of sober home people you're supposed to be helping to an entertainment business. If that's what he's going to do, more power to him." The Bamboo Room has had its share of problems. The 17-year-old club was struggling to fill seats and was closed for more than a year before reopening last year.

It also closed in May 2008 after the economy tanked. The club opened three years later, but only on weekends. "We really want to make The Bamboo Room work," Olive said. "It's going to take some time, but I think we can make something beautiful for the community." kthompsonpbpost.com Twitter: KevinDThompsonl to tie their catch to their belt and keep on fishing, but like I said, that's like ringing the dinner bell for bull sharks," he said. When sharks are spotted close to the shores in Palm Beach County, Ocean Rescue officials pull everyone from the water and raise the double-red flags, said Lt.

Philip Harris of Ocean Rescue. "But if you're fishing or diving far out, there are obviously no lifeguards out there. You've got to be careful," Harris said, adding that there were no shark advisories Wednesday. Many times, divers and spearfishermen share the waters with different shark species without injury, Com-magere said. In fact, several people sign up for dives at his centers just to see the "majestic creatures," he said.

"Let's face it, sharks don't have the best reputation," Commagere said. "Every time they're depicted in a movie or TV show, the 'Jaws' music comes on and you think you're on the menu. But the fact is you're not on their food chain." lramadanpbpost.com Twitter: luluramadan and soon will own the Inter-national Polo Club, supported Gerwig and Councilman Michael Drahos. The two incumbents who he supports were ousted from the council. Monday's finalists were chosen from a pool of 30 people who applied. Several members of the council and the public commented on how happy they were that so many people took an interest in the village. Many applicants said they plan to run in the 2018 election cycle. mmorganpbpost.com will not become a full-time church.

Common Ground, a Southern Baptist Church, has been holding Sunday services at the club the past six months. Before that, services were held at the Common Ground Coffee Bar on South Street. A Wednesday evening service will be added at The Bamboo Room, Olive said. The Bamboo Room will still feature music every Friday and Saturday that will range from blues to jazz to country. "We're staying true to the club's roots," Olive said.

Police did not mention in their report if anything was stolen from the men or if they were just shot at. It's unclear who shot the 22-year-old man or if Hall's boyfriend will be charged in the case.

Hall was previously arrested for theft in March, according to county records. hwinstonpbpost.com Sharks continued from Bl centers in Palm Beach and Broward counties. "They'll swim around in the waters and, in most cases, divers can fend them off." If they do bite, they usually hold on and shake for a bit, then release, Hueter said. Bull sharks have serrated teeth, which cut easily through tissue, and are larger than other species common along Florida's coast like blacktip sharks. "If they bite, it's a mistake in a sense, but in the case of bull sharks, their biting machinery is well-developed and the wounds they cause are very serious," Hueter said.

Bull sharks are also able to survive in waters with low salinity, so they can be found year-round in inlets, rivers, estuaries and even close to shore along the coast of Florida, Hueter said. Hueter suggests having one person watch for sharks during spearfishing excursions, and immediately taking captured fish to the surface. "Some spearfishermen like Siskind continued from Bl education experience. "This is somebody (who) is basically the face of education in Wellington right now," he said. The appointment for the final two years of Gerwig's term comes after a contentious election cycle in which two warring factions spent more than $2 million on the campaigns.

Businessman Mark Bellissimo and billionaire Jeremy Jacobs poured money into the campaigns of their preferred candidates. Deputies: Man robs teen at gunpoint By Hannah Winston Palm Beach Post Staff Writer DELRAY BEACH A 29-year-old man was arrested early Wednesday after investigators say he robbed a teen of his phone, wallet and pants at gunpoint west of the city. At about 1 a.m., a 15-year-old was walking home from a late-night training session at Planet Fitness when he was approached by Felex Joseph and another unidentified male, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office. Armed with handguns, they stopped him in front of a Bank of America on West Atlantic Avenue, just east of Florida's Turnpike.

Joseph and the other man told the teen to hand over his phone, wallet, pants, socks and shoes, deputies said. The men ran east on Atlantic and the teen ran to a nearby gas station to ask for help. Soon after, the sheriff's helicopter, K-9 units and other deputies located Joseph nearby but the other man got away. Joseph, who faces one charge of robbery, is being held on $100,000 bail at the Palm Beach County jail. Joseph has been charged previously with attempted second-degree murder, aggravated assault with a firearm, giving a false name and unlawful possession of prescription drugs.
