WNJU-TV, which has its antenna on the Empire State Building although its license is assigned to Linden, is basically a Spanish-language station. So why has it added Japanese programs? Well, it comes down to economics. Recently there came into being here a company called Nippon Television whose president is Yojl Nomaguchi, who operates a restaurant chain four in Manhattan and one in Queens.

It was the aim of Nomaguchi and Nippon Television to acquire air time from an existing TV station, put on Japanese programing and 3eek their own sponsors. The buying and reselling of radio-TV time is- not an uncommon practice. Profit Motive Nomaguchi sought out Carlos Barba, vice president and general manager of WNJU-TV, owned by Columbia Pictures Industries, one of the major movie companies. Earba, having some weekend fringe time that was not doing too well in turning a profit, sold three hours on Saturday night to Nippon Television, which began Its programing last month. Each Saturday at 3 p.m.

over Channel 47, Nippon Television presents "Star Monomane Utsgassen," described as a "show of the vocal mimicry." This is followed at 9:30 by "Daikon-No-Hana," a one-hour comedy drama starring Takewaki Muga.
