Cotton Insect Situation During the past week, weevils were found damaging a high percentage of the small squares in the earliest planted cotton of Central Texas according to F. L. Thomas of the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station, A.

M. College of Texas. Records indicate that weevils are still emerging from hibernation -and scattering into cotton. In a number of fields examined, the weevil population continued high, especially in the early planted cotton in close proximity to locations which furnished adequate winter shelter. Averages of over 700 weevils per acre were found in.

fields inspected in Burleson and McLennan counties. Flea hoppers have not been found in damaging numbers in cotton of Central Texas. In the 19 fields examined, the populations ranged from 0.to 14 per 100 terminals, or an average of 3. In the vicinity of Port Lavaca, flea hoppers were found in injurious numbers in 15 fields examined. Federal entomologists state that planters are dusting with a DOT mixture at the rate of about 12 pounds per acre and securing very good results.

A very quick kill is being obtained and it is thought that only a few applications of this mixture will be necessary to keep this pest under control during the entire season. Reports indicate that thrips are continuing to cause injury to young cotton in Central and North Texas. In some cases, these pests are causing the plants to shed small squares.
