The Texas Western Miners are the 1966 college basketball champion for the United States. And Bobbie Joe Hill and Or-sten Artis of the Miners are All-Americans. Even though the wire services will not recognize them as such. The Helms Athletic Foundation, which has a tremendous reputation in this land of ours, has announced the Miners as the national champion, confirming the NCAA title which the Miners won with their skills and talents and abilities at College Park, Md. last month.

At the same time the Helms Foundation named Cazzie Rus-sel of Michigan as the Player of the Year and announced a 36-player All-America team of 12 forwards, 12 centers and 12 guards. Both Hill and Artis were named on the squad. IT IS PLEASANT TO FIND other teams selected around the majored in Far Eastern and Russian affairs. During February they collected fish from an 850-foot gill net for their study. Game fish represented 60.5 per, cent of the fish taken by number and 76 per cent by weight. Slightly more than 50 per cent of the game fish were walleye. The rest were catfish, black bass; white bass and crappie. With so many walleye in the lake, it seems that a few more of them would be caught.

We think the reason no more walleye are caught is that the spe cie is relatively new to this part the country and that most fishermen just do not know how to fish for them. Some of us might do well to study some walleye fishing techniques. MRS. JOHN J. YOUNG OF El Paso has appealed to this corner for assistance in prov-.

ing to friends that she is not making up fish stories. Since some people think fishing and prevarication go hand in hand; we like to straighten out the record when we can. Mrs. Young told a story of a fish that tried to swallow an other fish and a larger fish tryr ing to swallow both the smaller, ones. Now if that was all, it shouldn't be too hard to believe.

But it seems that a large green water snake was trying to swallow all three fish when a couple of fishr ermen happened on the strange goings-on. The two anglers took care of the snake, with a few swats of the boat paddle and hauled the whole mess "in to be photo? graphed by a newspaper phor tographer at the Sentinel in nearby Orlando, Fla. Most of the fish are being taken on silver and gold weighted spinners. A number of anglers are hoping the same report will be coming from Caballo in the very near future.
