10 (AP) Alejo Russell, a bandylegged, 29-year-old swatter from Argentina, provided the out-itanding performance of the third round of the national men's tennis championships today as he rUminated the veteran Frank X. Shields, fifth-seeded home-bred player. Russell won 46, 6--4, 64, in a match that wasn't too surprising after the first few games in which Shields showed that he wasn't playing with his old-time skill. The victory put the Argentine, who is in the midst of a financial argument with his tennis association back home, into the quarterfinal round, where he will oppose Bill Talbert of Wilmington, one of the two ranking favorites for the 1945 title. old speed king plans to retire from record breaking for good.

Charles Mitchell of Tulsa tore after Hutson nil the way, just step behind, but couldn't come close enough to bring him down. The Packers were more alert than the Collegians and intercepted five passes to wreck the All-Stars aerial game. The All-Stars were also outlcascd on the ground, where the Packers smashed 132 yards to 6.1 for the Collegians.

Charlie Trippi, All-Stars captain, from Gerrfiia, and Michigan's mighty Tommy Harmon shared the laurels for the although both were forced from the game by injuries. Oklahoma captain, seems to be the answer to Coach Herb Kopfs prayer for a triple-threat tailback for the Boston Yanks this season. Johnny is no newcomer to pro ranks as he has three years service behind him with the Chicago Cards, and started the 1944 campaign with the Pittsburg Steelers before he was traded to the Yanks. All of these years he has been playing wingback or fullback, and has never passed. About three days ago Kopf tried several of his backs in the tailback slot, looking for a triple threat who could alternate with "Babe" Diman-cheff. Martin told the coach he was considered a "good" passer in college pnd would like a chance at the job.

Today Martin made the grade in a line scrimmage. Operating from tailback he turned in a great passing exhibition. His ability as a runner and kicker is already well-known, and now that he can pass he will be a definite threat this year. In addition to the scrimmage today, the squad went through a rugged afternoon drill, with "Shorty" Ray, National League rules expert, gjving a talk on the new rules and their various interpretations between drills.
