But the audience yelled its approval just the same. They roared for more and madder acrobatics and almost tore down the house when she sang "My Rocking Horse Ran Away." Her voice sounded tired and broke a couple of times. But the only person who minded was Betty herself. The thousands and thousands who clamored to get in must have heard the applause way out on Washington st. If Betty has had any doubt about her popularity in Boston, her fears must now be dispelled.

Miss HuttonWOW! Betty gave her ardent admirers such different songs as "It's Murder, He says" and "It Had to Be You." She wore a charming black chiffon gown which emphasized her blondeness and as she sang she made those strange faces which have always characterized her comedy. The adolescents in the house gave her more adoration than they offered to Frank Sinatra on the occasion of his last personal appearance in Boston. B. C. High Seniors Move to College Sept.

The change is due to an overflow enrolment at the high school.

DeINITT GILBERT wanted both the woman and the money. Of equal vigor is the role played by Edward G. Robinson. Here is the Nemesis who pursues the murderers with cuninng per. sistence.

If you ever wanted to kill a man or woman, and wondered what it would feel like to watch the tentacles of law and justice fasten relentlessly on you, "Double Indemnity" gives the vicarious fear of retribution for your sins. You can sit in your seat quietly and experience all the worry, anxiety and terror of a hunted murderer. It isn't a customary feeling. but it brings about a certain thrill. Mr.

Robinson, as Mac Murray's boss, insists there Is something queer about the death of a man who recently took out an insurance policy calling fot double indemnity if death is by accident. He plays a cat and mouse game and eventually the woman and the man are trapped. The conclusion is terrifically dramaticand winds up the story with inexorable tragedy. "Minstrel Man" with Benny Fields is the second attraction STATE AND ORPHEUM "Secret Command" "Kansas City Kitty" 'Secret Command," a Columbia Picture directed by Eddie Sutherland. Screen play by Roy Chanslor from a story by John and Ward Hawkins.

The cast: Sant Gallagher Pat O'Brien Jill McCann Carole Landis Jeff Gallagher Chester Morris Lea Damaron Ruth Warrick Red Kelly Barton Mac Lane Brownell Tom Tully Miller Wallace Ford Max Leasing Howard Freeman Ben Royall Erik Rolf Curly Matt McHugh Between the desperate seriousness of "Secret Command" and the complete nonsense of "Kansas City Kitty" an avid movie-goer should be able to find a moment's amusement. Neither of the State and Orpheum Theatres new offerings are any great shakes as film art. But "Secret Command" presents the intrepid Pat O'Brien in a standard do-or-die melodrama about saboteurs in shipyards while "Kansas City Kitty" is a silly fiction in which Joan Davis practically has the field to herself. Pat O'Brien appears as an ex-for Conte. 2.

Richard Martin, who was born in Spokane Dec. 12, 1917, and attended the University of California, has been making films since 1941 and is under contract to RK0 Radio. His next picture is "Having Wonderful Crime," and other films are "Marine Raiders," "Army Surgeon," "Leopard Man," "Hitler's Children" and "Bombadier." QWhen was Diana Lynn born and where? Kathryn's sister is Frances Raeburn. No, Kathryn is not divorced from John Shelton, who is now fighting overseas. eign correspondent now working for the FBI. He and the lovely Carole Landis, also an agent, pose as a young married couple in a seacoast city. Pat gets a job in a shipyard where he tracks down a ring of Nazi saboteurs while Carole stays home and keeps house.

Somewhere in the yarn Chester Morris is mixed up as Pat's brother who takes an unconscionably long time discovering Pat's actual status, despite plenty of hints. "Secret Command" has its exciting moments. You can imagine that anything Joan Davis is concerned with is pretty cockeyed. "Kansas City Kitty" has what amounts to about a single paragraph of story with the rest of the film taken up by Joan's corny old vaudeville gags and double takes. She appears as a piano teacher who moves into a next-door music publishing house as a song plugger.

In no time fiat she winds up owning the business lock, stock and barrel. At that point somebody lost hold on the reins of the story which goes gallivanting off in all directions at once. Bob Crosby and Jane Frazee are featured W. R. FENWAY "Man Front Frisco" "Louisiana Hayride" "Man From Frisco" by Ethel Hill and Arnold Manoff.
