And it managed to persuade O'Keefe to talk just a matter of days before the statute expired. The nearly five-year-old story of the mail robbery investigation has been one of spying, counter-spying, double dealing, payoffs and threats but none of the so-called suspects has cracked.

If it is going to go to bat at all in the way of prosecution, the government must have something to present to a Grand Jury within the next three-and-a-half months. The Federal statute of limitations for prosecution of armed robbery is five years and takes effect Aug. 14 the fifth anniversary of the $1.5 million mail truck heist.

Postal inspectors who have conducted the investigation since its inception turned over everything they gathered to the Justice Dept. about a year ago. He had been fleeced out of his share of the Brink's loot and was facing time in jail on several charges not connected with the robbery. The Commonwealth of Massachusetts had taken over jurisdiction of the case at the time because the Federal government had been unable to indict in 1953 at the close of Cambridge, who was killed in August, 1965,1 in Hayne-ville, while engaged in civil rights demonstrations. The awards enable seminarians to take leaves of absence to work in areas of social concern.
