Ired By the Duke's Harvard 'Cab' Washington, Jan. 18 (News Bureau)- Wayne's invasion of Harvard Souare last Tuesday in an armored personnel carrier provided by an Army reserve unit came under heavy fire today from top Pentagon bras. Assistant Secretary Jerry W. Friedheim shot. off a memo to Army officials demanding to know who had okayed the stunt.

The Pentagon was anxious that somebody might accuse the Army of helping to promote a new Wayne movie, "McQ," which happens to be opening in the neighborhood. A 33-Gallon Visit And how about the energy crisis? Friedheim fretted about how much gas was used by the 13-ton machine, which guzzles it at a rate of just under three miles to the gallon. Over-all, the reservists put 100 miles on the carrier in driving to Cambridge, from Fort Devens, and back, and in touring the Harvard campus. The 178th Infantry Brigade reservists drove Wayne through a barrage of snowballs to a confrontation with the staff of the Harvard Lampoon, the university's humor magazine, which in inviting Wayne, had called the actor "the biggest fraud in history." Military' brass, who watched with anger when the "invasion" showed up on national television, worried what would have happened if the carrier had mowed down one of the protesting American Indians in Harvard Square. "No real harm was done and there was a lot of fun and games, but some officers do not look kindly on the military forces being involved in fun and games," a Pentagon official said, adding that any Reserve participation in civilian events should be cleared by the Defense Department.

Without Permission The reservists never bothered to get approval from higher allthority. They thought the stunt, proposed by the Lampoon, was a good way to advertise the Reserves. An anonymous regular Army officer at Fort Devens agreed, saying: "It was good exposure. I wish the Lampoon had asked us instead of the Reserve."
