The Boston Globe Monday, November 13, 1967 24 Powerful Story of Chain Gang Pulls No Punches "COOL HAND LIKE" by Dorm Pearce and Frank R. Pierson. Based on novel by Mr. Pearce. Directed by Stuart Rosenbera.

Is "Cool Hand Luke" Certainly it isn't if you want escapism.

But it does take one out of personal problems into the morass of men who live outside conventional society and who are among the embittered, classless and he has to do with much flair and courage that he stands out among his toiling associates as a hero. Of such men are legends born among the poor and unfortunate. Although certain people will try to find a "message" in "Cool Hand Luke" and find "symbols" in every foot of film, including the final scenes in the church where Luke has sought refuge from the gun laden posse, this is highly unnecessary. Taken as a story of humanity's cru- By MARJORY ADAMS Glob Critic "Cool Hand Luke" at the Paramount Theater is a tough story of a man's integrity, played with perceptive-ness, honesty and compassion by Paul Newman. There is no softness in "Cool Hand Luke." It hits hard, spares no punches, deals with rough, sadistic and unhappy men.

The members of Luke's chain gang are life's losers. So is Luke, but he does what i V--" "ill I 1 aafaialTiiaaTalTmrfTl elty and misunderstanding, the picture hits its mark. Question Sparks Cocktail Party Conversation By GEORGE McKINNON You can always ignite a cocktail party conversation by tossing in a remark such as "I thought the movie was better than the book," or "It was much' beter on the stage." This Fall you can use this status-seeking ploy with three films now playing in town "Far From the Madding Crowd," "The Happiest Millionaire" and "Camelot." The big Warner Bros, musical "Camelot" will evoke the quickest reaction, particularly among Julie Andrews' admirers. According to this coterie, Jack Warner in his last film before his semi-retirement has done it again.

Those who were enchanted by Miss Andrews' performance as Eliza on the stage in "My Fair Lady" were outraged when Audrey Hepburn was signed for the movie. Now we have Vanessa Kedgrave playing Miss Andrews' stage role in the expensive new film. Hardly anyone will dispute the fact that Miss Andrews sang "Lusty Month of May" infinitely better than Miss Redgrave. But Vanessa is by far the more beautiful woman (remarkably like Garbo in some angles) and since the music is downgraded in the film perhaps it is not so important that Julie has the better voice. Richard Burton (stage) versus Richard Harris (films).

That should provoke a lively exchange. Here's another possibility for debate: the stunningly handsome, fanciful stage production in contrast to Joshua Logan's expensive but heavily realistic screen presentation. Then there is Robert Goulet's stage Lancelot (he did walk something like Frankenstein's monster in his armor) as compared to Franco Nero's dashing, if boyish, film knight. But then, of course, you may be one of those who found the stage version pretentious and totally lacking in wit, so you can switch the conversation to Thomas Hardy, Julie Christie and the merits of "Far From the Madding 'Carmen Baby' Hits R.I. Snag "Carmen, Bity one of the more frank of the sex films, now playing in Boston, ran into trouble in Providence.

The City Board of Licenses refused to grant a' license for the showing of the film and demanded a jury trial to determine if the film was obscene. The case is still in court. In Boston during the past year or so films brought into court on obscenity charges have all been cleared for showing. Censorship is just about dead in this former citadel of Puritanism.
