Aldermen candidates who advised Election Commission Chairman Anthony F. Cota they would seek a retally are Dr. Philip E.

Doherty in Ward 3, and Andrew Capuano in Ward 5. elected an assessor. Mrs. Mary Tomeo, 33, wife of a Union sq. market operator, became the first woman ever to hold this office.

She defeated former Mayor and Rep. Harold A. Palmer and former Assessor Henry T. Brady. Piro.

24. and another vonne school teacher, Boston Latin School instructor Frederick E. Irons, 30, won their contests for ward alderman and srhnnl Cota indicated that Lawrence J. Kelleher, Ward 1 school committee aspirant, nay seek a recount. The latter lost to Joseph Gentile by 33 votes.

Gentile is a 22-year-old student at the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy. Doherty, on the- basis of a final but unofficial tabulation, committee, respectively. Piro is a Wakefield teacher. Irons defeated incumbent Harold D. MacDonald to win a place on the school board.

Most significant upset was staged by Edward C. Murphy, 36, a meat cutter in a Ball sq. market making his first run for public office. He outdistanced incumbent Ward 6 Alderman Edward F. Moyni-han by 224 votes.

Mayor Lawrence F. Bretta handily won a third term besting challenger Harold J. Drew by a margin of almost 3-1. Unofficial results gave 20.727 ballots to Bretta and 7344 to Drew. With the accent on youth, young housewife was P.

Educator Victor by 8 City Clerk Monte G. Basbas was elected mayor as he defeated Ward 7 Alderman William Carmen as approximately 65 percent of the voters went to the polls. Basbas, clerk for 14 years, smassed 19,965 votes to 11,585 for Carmen. Basbas will succeed Mayor Donald L. Gibbs is retiring after three two-year terms.

The closest contest of the fay was won by Boston University Professor Harry H. Crosby, who received 961 votes to edge H. James Shea an engineer, who had 953 votes, ind Atty. Melvin Norris. 948 votes, for the post of Alderman in Ward 7.
