Movie Sets Discussed by Lum 'n Abner The $5000 limit on scene construction for each motion picture is one of the favorite topics of conversation in Hollywood, according to Chester Lauck and Morris Goff (Lum and Abner, respectively, of the radio series.) But Lauck and Goff are less worried about the situation than the producers of the huge spectacle pictures which require expensive and ornate settings, because the series of films the pair is starring in calls for just a few simple sets. Lauck pointed out that Shakespeare got along on a lot less than the present limit. "All he needed was a placard reading 'A Street in Venice' or 'Another part of the and there he was. Appar ently it was taken for granted in those days that the audience would contribute a share of the imaeination. "The modern idea of drama," Lauck continued, "apparently has been to make things so plain that the least intelligent person watch ing a picture would have no dif iiculty in getting the meaning although the industry has been getting away from that lately." "That's right," said Goff.

"You don't hear so many jokes any more about dumbling up' the pic tures the way you did a while back. In fact, the audience is too sophisticated for some of us poor, unsophisticated actors sometimes. If ypu pull any 'mellerdramer' like we used to use a few decades ago, the customers are pretty apt to laugh in the wrong places." The doings in the little Jot 'Em Down Store run by Lum and Ab ner are heard every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday at 7 clock over WHP. Deems Taylor, genial host of the program, will again have the rare distinction of introducing one of his own compositions, "May Day Carol," which will be sung by Miss Swarthout following her interpretation of a medley from "Blossom Time," Sigmund Romberg's well loved operetta. Dramatic highlight of Sunday's broadcast will be a tribute to the memories of four heroic men of our Armed Forces who have given their lives in the fight for Planes Carry CBS Records i To England Bombers flying from the United States to England these days are carrying not cnly implements of war but also evidences of. the cultural amity existing between the two countries. Some of the big warplanes are taking to the British Broadcasting Corporation packages containing records of the British American Festival programs heard over WHP and CBS Fridays from 3.30 to 4 p. m.

The records, perfor. ed by the Columbia Concert Orchestra, must be wrapped with special care in asmuch as they are fragile and are extremely susceptible to breakage at the high altitudes and in the zero and sub zero temperatures in which the bombers fly. So far as is known, all the British American Festival records already sent have reached their destination in good condition. The BBC has been assembling and selecting the records for a series on its home service. The first program of the series is scheduled for Sunday, June 7, from 1.30 to 1.55 p.

The belief has been expressed that the programs, made up of classic and contemporary works by British and American musicians, arrive in England at a particularly fortunate time since a survey recently conducted there shows that symbolic musie is in demand greater than ever before.
