VIET NAM Continued from Page 1 Four Vietnamese Skyraider fighterlbombers aided in driving off the Communist ambushers, but a military spokesman in reviewing fighting in Binh Dinh Province credited B57 strikes for much of the success. "The use of American Air Force jets has turned the coin of pessimism," he said. "Binh Dinh went through a rather tense period early in February, but as the month ended and March began the situation overall became much better." Behind the optimism was the memory of 1954 when the Communists- who fought then -did cut highway 19 and evencaptured the mountain stronghold of Pleiku. They had almost repeated this vietory this February, Although the spokesman gave credit to the jets in Binh Dinh he said they had not been too successful elsewhere and that the A-1 skyraider still remains the workhorse of air activity. B-57s in the Phuoc Tuy area 50 miles east of Saigon bombed suspected Communist positions for days and there still is no indication of the results.

The jungle is too dense for photographic reconnaissance and the government decided it would take too many troops to comb the area. The spokesman summed up the month's activities by reporting 389 Viet Cong soldiers killed in action in February and 133 government troops killed. While the situation has brightened in Binh Dinh Province the Communists have increased their harassment in the immediate Saigon area. No major fighting was reported but a series of Communist attacks included the burning of a bridge at Gay Day, only five miles from downtown Saigon. Government troops fanned out in several directions from the capital city to chase off the insurgents.

The Viet Cong launched a mortar attack on Xuan Loc, 40 miles northeast of Saigon, during the night, no losses were reported. Meanwhile the Communist National Liberation Front (the Viet Cong) has continued to protest U.S. bombing actions in North Viet Nam and the landing of 3500 marines at Da Nang. A series of broadcasts said the Viet Cong "reserve for themselves the right to strike back and take all measures to oppose aggression." WASHINGTON (AP) The latest House and Senate payroll records show 191 aides are employed by New England's 12 Senators and 195 by the 25 House members from the six states. Senate payrolls now are resemi-annually.

The current report covers the last two quarters of 1964. House payrolls are made available monthly, and the latest report covers January, 1965. The total staff salaries for the 191 in New England senatorial offices for the Oct. 1- Dec. 31, 1964, period approximated $380,780, For the New England House aides, the January salaries totaled about $115.000.

A study of both lists discloses no change in the number or names of relatives ployed by New England bers of Congress. These relatives are: William L. Saltonstall, administrative assistant to his father, Sen. Leverett Saltonstall (R-Mass); Joseph A. Volpe Asserts Mayor Back Sales Tax Plan An overwhelming majority of Massachusetts mayors have endorsed Gov.

Volpe's sales tax program, it was announced today at a meeting of the Massachusetts Mayors' Assn. which was addressed by the governor. Speaking to municipal chief executives at the Madison Hotel, Volpe applauded the majority for their action in supporting his plan for a 3 percent limited sales tax and an upward revision in the state income tax. The governor advised the mayors that his talks in recent weeks with ordinary citizens has disclosed the people are way ahead of some of the folks on Beacon Hill." He said that legislators will respond to the voice of the citizenry and approved his tax program "if they hear the voice of the people." Volpe decried the "treachery" which he said is already evident in the calculated distortions being voiced by sales tax opponents. Referring to the seven upcoming public hearings which the joint legislative committee on taxation has scheduled throughout the state, the governor said, "Let's be sure these hearings are not stacked by the opposition.
