43 TRAVEL RESORTS CRUISES TOURS Climate, Geology Make Houses Unique Bermuda Ablaze With Ptnc and White The Boston Sunday Globe July 5, 14 HAMILTON, Bermuda This island in the Atlantic is known to thousands of tourists as that place where most of the houses are pink and all the roofs are white. There are others who remember the little British colony where there are no street numbers just the names of houses, like The Pebble, Turtle Cove, Banana Patch and Angel Steps. vt; I I i these characteristics form a type of architecture unknown anywhere else in the world. It is an architecture which has been effected by two main factors: climate and the geology of the island group. Though the climate is mild and the islands have never seen a snowflake or been bitten by frost, a Bermuda house must be strong enough to withstand high winds (sometimes hurricanes) which whistle through the colony for a brief period during the Fall or Winter.

It often comes as a surprise to visitors to learn that all of the old Bermuda buildings and more than half of the new ones are built of stone taken right from the hillsides of the islands. Beneath the shallow surface of And still other visitors have gone below the roofs and beyond the names to discover the unique, warm architecture of Bermuda homes, churches and other buildings. These are the people who, at informal color-slide sessions in their living rooms at home, tell their friends of such Bermuda sights as the rippled roof which gathers precious rain water; the buttery (a slender, tower-like food-storage building which was outmoded by the refrigerator); the terraced chimney which marches up the face of the house; the welcoming-arms steps; and the small interiors of the homes with their tray ceilings and' fireplaces of varying heights. Molded as a unit into a typical Bermudian dwelling, soil, there is a great stratum of soft Aeolian limestone which is formed of wind-drifted shell particles and sand, and is locally known as "coral." This accounts for the presence of the quarries where massive blocks of limestone are cut from the hillside, and then, because it is still soft and porous, are easily sawed into building-block size. Exposed to the air, the cream-colored stone becomes darker in color, and, more important, becomes much harder.

Strengthens With Age In less mild climates, these stone houses would be likely to crumble with the repeated attacks -of frost, but in Bermuda, the older the house the stronger it becomes. As evidence, the islands have have many nouses which are more than two centuries old, BERMUDA Continued On Page 45 ...4 ft iN ft" III 1 I V.
