SANDRA BAMBURG and ERIC JOHNSON Mr. and Mrs. Billy R. Bamburg of Corsicana announce the engagement of their daughter, Sandra, to Eric Johnson, son of Mr. and Mrs.

Harold A. Johnson of Austin. The wedding is planned for May 30 at the First Baptist Church in Corsicana. The bride-elect graduated from Corsicana High School in 1979 and is currently attending Navarro College. She is employed in the Social Security office in Corsicana.

Her fiance is a 1977 graduate of Travis High School in Austin. He is presently employed by True Floor Concrete in Dallas. Anali- Milioni! Tammy Raylene Almond, granddaughter of Mrs. Margeleene Almond of Dallas, will wed lister Paul Await, son of Mr. and Mrs.

Ray Await, on Saturday, May 9 at the Beverly Hills Baptist Church in Dallas. After a trip to Orlando, the couple will live in Dallas. She is a graduate of Sunset High School in Dallas and he is a 1974 graduate of Corsicana High School. CASSIE ANN HOLTMAN and DANNY LYNN ATKEISSON Atkeisson-Holtman Mr. and Mrs.

Allen Holtman of League City announce the engagement of their daughter, Cassie Ann, to Danny Lynn Atkeisson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Billy Don Atkeisson of Corsicana. The wedding is planned for May 23 at the University Heights Baptist Church in Huntsville. The bride-elect graduated from league City High School and has attended Navarro College.

She will graduate in May from Sam Houston State University. Her fiance graduated from Corsicana High School, attended Navarro College and Sam Houston State University. He is currently employed by the Huntsville Industrial Supply. He is the grandson of Mr. and Mrs.

Durr to chair committee Robert Durr, of Corsicana, was recently elected chairman of the advisory committee of the industrial sewing machine mechanics program at Texas State Technical Institute in Waco. Durr is an employee of Texas Miller Products, Inc. in Corsicana.

The committee, comprised of professionals in the apparel industry, assists the faculty in development of the most up-to- date curriculum for training industrial sewing machine mechanics. industrial sewing machine mechanics program is nine months in length. Students work at their own pace to learn how to maintain, troubleshoot and repair all types of automatic sewing machines used in the garment industry. Drug abuse group asks for funds A group of Navarro County Drug and Alcohol Abuse Committee members is in Austin today and Friday to lobby for funds to start a crisis center and hotline in the county. Going are Dixie Brown, Buster Brown, Kay Hable.

McNutt, chairman of the committee, said that the group is applying for grant money from the Texas Department of Community Affairs to begin operation on a drug and alcohol abuse crisis center and hotline in Navarro County. While in Austin, the group will meet with State Senator Dee Travis and visit the Crisis Treatment Center in Travis County. They will also meet with the director of the Drug Abuse Prevention Center on Friday. McNutt would not say how much the proposal requests, but said that the amount would be used for the first three months of the operation of tht' crisis center and hotline.

Then the committee will look for funding from within the county, he said. The hotline would be manned by trained volunteers who will operate it on a referral basis. The hotline will not be manned 24 hours a day, he said. McNutt said that the Medical Arts Clinic has agreed to give the committee space for the operation. (Sun photo by Christy Groscek) Students recognized at banquet Students recognizing the achievements of other students was the theme of last Student Appreciation Banquet at Navarro College. Following a buffet-style supper, Eric Coleman, president of the Navarro College Student Council, emceed a program that included an entertaining speech by McAfee Daniel, director of the division of humanities at the college, as well as presentations of awards by the Student Council to outstanding students and faculty. Students presented awards were Russell Brown, Cynthia AJdama, Anna Arteaga, Sharia Pickard, Jessie Haglefeg, Mindy Bottoms, Steve Godbey, Becky Melton, Gregg Stubbs, Sandy Hughes, Bill Booth, Brad Butler, Pam Fulton, Dwayne Betiek, Rebecca Burnett, David Moorehead. These students were recognized for their "committment, dedication and friendship to fellow students and outstanding service and loyalty to the concept of continued excellence at Navarro Seven special awards were given also. One award was for recognition for assistance to student advisory council and one was for of the Neva Trojacek, editor of the Marion Paden, SAC advisor; Lola Searcy, SAC representative for 198081; Ileen Ray, sponsor of the year; and David Garrett, for dedicated service, were special award recipeints.

Bob Turner was cited for his assistance to the student advisory council. A stranding ovation was given when McAfee Daniel stepped up to receive the award for Professor of the Decade. Collins scholarships awarded The Collins Board of Trustees met last week to determine this Collins Scholarship recipients. They awarded 44 scholarships. Collins scholarships are awarded on the basis of financial need, personal qualities and leadership qualities, and provide the student with $1,200 per semester to pay for tuition, fees, room and board, books and required instructional supplies.

Full scholarships were awarded to John Alexander, Lisa Alexander, Eurolonda Baptist, Debbie Barham, Chrisben Bernal, Sandra Berry, Donna Caton, Teresa Cox, Rhonda Dragoo, Dana Dunlap, Karen Eddlemon, Steve Elmore, Julie Evans, Tim Ferrer, David George, Carla Huddleston, Rod Kelley, Mark Kimbler, Sharon Lassiter, Tom Lester, Rhonda Lewis, Mary Frances Matous, Patricia McCulloch, Beth McSpadden and Sharron Miller. Also, Marsha Puriofy, Mary Jane Robinson, Robert Shelton, Vickie Spence, Ricky Stokes, Dale Thomas, David Turner, Mike Vaughan, Debbie Warren, Stuart White, Vikki White, Cheryl Williams and Angie Woodcock. Receiving half scholarships were Cynthia Helmer, Sam McElroy and Laurie Murra. Recipients of three special scholarships that will pay all non-personal college expenses will be announced on May 13. Collins Scholarship administrator, Mike Harwood said that next year Collins scholarships will go up to $1,400 per semester.

He is employed in the Corsicana Police Department.

Drug abuse programs set at schools here Gen. Robbie Risner, director of the Texas War on Drugs, will visit Corsicana Friday to speak to students at four assemblies. The Texas War on Drugs was organized by H. Ross Perot, a Dallas computer magnate. are fortunate to live in a community where our school board and community leaders are taking a stand for drug abuse education through programs such as said Bill McNutt III, chairman of the Navarro County Drug anc Alcohol Abuse Committee.

Gen. Risner will begin the day speaking to Collins Middle School students from a.m. He will then go to Sam Houston Elementary for a a.m. session. Fifth graders from Lincoln and Travis will also attend.

The afternoon program begins at 1:15 at Drane Middle School. James L. Collins Catholic School students will attend that session. The last appearance will be at 2:30 p.m. at Corsicana High School.

The public is welcome. CHS students qualify for state competition Forty Corsicana High School students qualified for the state industrial arts competition in the seventh annual Heart-of- Texas Regional Industrial Arts competition, which was held at Navarro College last Friday and Saturday. Those students qualifying will go on to state competition at Waco this Friday and Saturday to compete in drafting and woodworking. Students who qualified for the state competition in drafting are Jackie Thompson, who received four state qualifying ribbons and a $250 scholarship; Stuart White, who received four state qualifying ribbons, Eric Drain, two state qualifying ribbons; and David Howard, two state qualifying ribbons. Students who received one state qualifying ribbon apiece for drafting were Susan Evans, Brad Purifoy, Steve Andrews, Kathy Hollen, Carl White and Harold Usser.

The Industrial Arts Club project and Chapter Competition team that qualified for state competition was comprised of Robert Edmonson, Cody Bell, Bobby Bland, David Hale, Charles Nelson and Stuart White. State qualifiers in woodworking were David Puente, with two state qualifying ribbons; Chris Norch, two state qualifying ribbons; John Robinson, two state qualifying ribbons; and Scott Hampel, two state qualifying ribbons. Woodworking students who qualified for state competition with one ribbon were James Palos, Chris Cross, Terry Farmer, Mike Barrington, Jon Speier, John Cunningham, George Lee, Tony Jones, Danny Elmore, Jay Simington, Daniel Scott and Kenneth Brewer. Students that were best-in- division in woodworking were Scott Hampel, Jon Speier. George and Tony Jones.

In drafting, they were Jackie Thompson, with two best-in- division awards; David Howard and Stuart White. First place drafting students were Stuart White, four ribbons; Jackie Thompson, three ribbons; Eric Drain, two ribbons: Kathy Hollen, two bons; David Howard, two ribbons; Brad Purifoy, Paul Drain; Harold Lasser; David Hale; Vickie Spence; Steve Andrews; Mark Nanny and Carl White. Newsom signs Libby Newsom of Mildred High has agreed to play basketball at Navarro College and Lady Bulldog coach, Maurice Drinks, was more than pleased with her decision. The versitile Newsom, a 5-9 inside performer at Mildred last season, averaged 14 points and over 12 rebounds per outing as a senior.

She played four seasons on the Eaglette varsity after moving up from the junior varsity in her freshman season. Drinks, who moves into his second season as head coach next fall, said Newsom will be an asset to the program since the team lacked inside strength last season. Newsom helped Mildred to a 15-10 season as a senior. The team was district runnerup and Newsom was first team all-district. She was honorable mention all-district during her sophomore and junior seasons.

Newsom said she has always wanted to play college basketball and was an outstanding student and took part in numerous activities during her four years at Mildred High. First place winners were named in the 17th Annual Corsicana Future Farmers of America Chapter Rodeo held Saturday at the youth exposition rodeo arena. Winners in each division included Charles Adams, of Marshall, bareback; Gilbert Hippard, of Corsicana, calf roping; Brent Dial, of Groverton, chute dogging; Travis Sachtleben and Boyd Rice, both of Corsicana, team roping; Kevin Reid, of Hillsboro, ribbon roping; Doyle Cannon, Bubba Rutherford and Steve James, all of Fairfield, steer saddling; Polly Prestige, of Corsicana, barrel racing; Matt Montfort, of Corsicana, bull riding; and Donnie Whitehead, of Mesquite, and Scott Jones, of Grand Saline, all-around cowboy.
