"The Court Martial of Captain Wycliff" proved to be a blunt, ugly, sordid tale that seemed to delight in wallowing in the mud while pretending to explore the lofty philosophical implications of an act of violence in which the killer is a hero and the victim a traitor.

At the same time, the Shah announced huge shrine estates in the area will be rented to peasants instead of broken up under the governments land reform program. The compromise move was taken to meet some of the objections of the Mullahs (religious leaders) who have been the leading opponents of land reform, particularly in regard to the shrine estates. An estimated 35,000 Iran ian peasants have been given land so far under the govern ment's program.

The pity of it is that thisi could have been so much more, if it had treated the dilemma of; a democracy weakened by its own laws protecting the individual with the dignity and thoughtfulness it deserved. It cannot be denied that this courtroom spectacle packed a punch in many of its scenes, which were forcefully enacted by what must be considered the cast of the year. But its sensationalism seemed to be dragged in mainly for shock value. The savage ripping of a woman's decency by her own brother after her confession of an adulterous relationship was distasteful as it blurted forth from the screen. The reputations of a young boy and an old man were destroyed along the way, too needlessly.

It all boiled down a question or word connotation. The de fendant, a zealous patriot with worthy war service, had not "murdered" the atomic traitor who was going back to East Germany, mayhap to help the Reds; he had "executed" him. You certainly cannot fault the cast for the failure of the script There were stars galore and without exception they gave it their all. Dick Powell (who unfortunately is withdrawing from his own series because of illness and will be seen only a few times more) put power into his implacable prosecution of a case he did not like. Dina Merrill was forthright an his sister.

Robert Webber was stern as the self-appointed protector of his country. Ed Begley was vigorous as his counsel. Charlie Ruggles, James Mac Arthur and Robert Keith were vivid in cameo roles on the stand. But the fury was all on the surface. The Bridges tale, titled "Gentlemen in Blue," related the story of the death of a chivalrous northern captain who fought with such elan that to this day his body is buried at the gate of the mansion where he fell. Bridges, as usual, was splendid in his portrayal. He had his own son, 12-year-old Jeff, playing with him, and the lad was surprisingly effective as the boy who alerts a bunch of Johnny Rebs, thus setting up the last battle of the war (fought one day after the surrender was signed).
