MOKDAT, 'APRIL 11, 19B8 BLYTHEVItLE (ARK.) COURIER TOWS Operation of Navy's New 'Flying Platform' Simple as Child's Play PALO ALTO, Calif. (AP) • off in a radically new wingless who can walk can fl> it. "You just lean the way you wain it to go," said test pilot Phil A. Johnston of the "research tool" developed by Killer Helicopter ,' of Palo Alto, for the Office of Naval Research. "I'd let my kids fly it. It's no tick ai all," he said. Johnston's first flight was Jan. 15 in the weird new machine which looks like a flying manhole cover with guard rails. It is a literal flying saucer. Established Feasibility Killer's development to dale, said the Office of Naval Research in the first disclosure of the new craft, "definitely has established the feasibility of radically simplified flight." The, "flying platform" works by a downward thrusting air stream generated by two countcrrotating propellers. T:iey produce balancing — The test pilot who first took "flying platform 11 says anyone force, like a gyroscope. Two dueled fans, presently powered by two small engines producing together less than 100 horsepower, suck in air 'Arough holes in top of the platform. The fans thrust air out the bottom of the six-foot-across platofrm with great fcrce. Ascent is controlled by throttle. Controlled by Throttle Von steer by leaning the way you want to go. What happens if the engine quit, however, is an obvious problem too. Without the lifting air thrust, you drop like a brick. Test flights so far have been little more than eight feet off the ground ai the Killer plant's testing field. The Navy says further research and development "will be neces- sary before these principles can be j applied to the production of military aircraft," Hairline Job DBS MOINES op)—M. D. Georgeson, Des Moiiies jeweler, claims one of the steadiest pairs of hands in Iowa. With a drill 1/20.000 of an inch in diameter he drilled a hole through a hair and then pushed another .hair through the hole. "The hardest part," he says, "was making the drill." ABOUl'lT!
