He is neve;1 a caricature. Nor does his characterization rely on carefully-built-up eags. That is why Mr. Hulot appeals to the connoisseur of comedy rather than to the less subtle audience which demands pratfalls and kicks in the posterior. But even the crudest person finds something to appreciate in '.'My Uncle, Mr. Hulot" with that incomparable Frenchman, Jacques Tati, in his favorite role at the Kenmore Theater. This is a very funny film. It should keep Boston laughing for weeks to come. The subject matter is worthy of Tati's brilliance and wit. He aims his light barbs at excess sanitatien, modern living, me chanical housekeeping and pushbuttons. He particularly despises plastic materials and in one scene a neighbor brings Mme. Arpel fake flowers, as being better than natural ones. That plastic fish fountain with its bright blue water is a triumph of tomfoolery. And the garage door operation on an electric beam which, can be opened or shut by the small dog, provided the tail is. up. When ihe tail is down there's no hope of rescuing the marooned Arpels. The cast: Kambei Takashi Shimura Gorobei Yoshio Inaba Katsushiro Isao Kimura K.vuzq Seiji Miyasuchi Heihachi Minorii Chiaki Shichirojl Daisukr Kato Kikuchiyo Toshiro Mifune Japanese-film-makers have turned to Hollywood for in spiration, although retaining much of their own artistry andi1011 between a village delicacy of detail in "-The Magnificent Seven" at the Telepix Theater. With no attempt to belittle this superb drama, I can only guess that its director adapted his action shots from the best that America has to offer in the -way of Western adventure. This is a lengthy film concerning the defense of a small village in Japan (the time is the 16th century) by seven courageous samurai, or men of war. Against really fearful odds the men, hired for three meals a day by the poverty stricken farmers, manage to end the bandit forays by killing every enemy. Hulot, beloved by boys and dogs, represents artlessness and simplicity. De spite his obvious desire to ad just to a more mechanical world he is always in trouble and bewildered by each new misadventure. Adored by Nephew Mr. Hulot is too nice to be disliked, but his relatives are often at the limit of their en durance. However, his small nephew, a boy whose every instinct is against the law and order of his antiseptic, gadget-minded parent, adores "mon oncle" as the bright star of the universe. The picture for the most part is continually nuanous. am there is one long period in which mirth sinks low and the laughter becomes forced. That is the plastic hos factory scene, which somehow misses the point and takes on a gag Quality which doesnt lit in with the remainder of the comedy. Tati as Mr. Hulot utters not a recognizable word. But in his abbreviated light coat with his short trousers and battered hat, and with his pipe stuck rak-ishly in his mouth, Mr. Hulot manages to be about the merriest man we Bostonians have seen since silent picture days.
