3 Leaving the Jt J' Duik ot ner estate of more than $100,000 to her friend of many years, Florence Converse, a retired editor of Atlantic Monthly, the will of the late Vida D. Scudder of Wellesley, noted liberal and author who died on Oct. 9 at the age of 92, has been allowed by Judge James F. Reynolds in the Norfolk Probate Court at Dedham. In the will which was drawn on Dec.

27, 1943, Miss Scudder, who was professor-emeritus of English literature at Wellesley College where she had been a member of the faculty for 41 years, left $3000 to the Society of the Companions of the Holy Cross, directing that the income be used preferably for 1 k4 VStr conferences and retreats on social justice at "Adelynrood," the Summer home of the society at South Byfield. She left $3000 to Rev. William B. Spofford of Tunkhannock, requesting that he use it in the promotion of social reform on Christian lines. To Smith College of Northampton and the Christian Medical College of Vellore, South India, she left $1000 each.

To Mrs. Ivy Smith of Cambridge she left $2000 and to Miss Winifred E. Hulbert of Westwood $1000. She left $3000 to Mrs. Mercy A.

Gerrior of Wellesley. Her home and the contents at 45 Leighton road, Wellesley, where she lived with Miss Converse since 1912, she left to Miss Converse for life and on her death it is to go to Wellesley College. A house and land that she owned at Shelburne, N. she left to Lawrence Philbrook of Shelburne. The rest and residue of her estate she left to her friend Florence Converse, and provided that, if she did not survive her, one-half of the remainder of her estate would go to Wellesley College and one-half to the Society of the Companions of the Holy Cross.

Her only heirs at law were listed ss two first cousins, Sylvia Scudder Bowditch of Boston and Francis Dutton of Lebanon, and they are not remembered with any bequests. The Fiduciary Trust Company was named executor of the will and the bank has filed a bond in the amount of $125,000, estimating that she left in personal property $83,000 and in real estate $20,000.
