Except for a 40-yard gaunt by T.

Sullivan in the initial quarter neither team threatened to score prior to the intermission. Southie began to roll upon receipt of the kickoff opening the third period. Short gains by Sullivan, Danny Barry and Dick Haney. plus a 15-yard penalty imposed against Charlestown, advanced the ball to Charlestown's nine-yard stripe. Sullivan then -took a hand-off from Barry and spurted through a gap in the right side of Charlestown's line to score.

The conversion try by placekick fell short. Charlestown began its rally early in the final quarter when John Gonnella intercepted a pass and 'returned to Southie's 43. Joe Bird and Bill Kelly alternated down to the 15 where a pass interception by Barry of Southie temporarily stemmed the comeback. The underdogs held Southie for no gain and the latter's subsequent punt went only to the 30-yard line. From there Charlestown scored in five plays.

Bird tossed a fiat pass to Kelly who fought to the 13 and Fran McGee skirted his own right end to the five. Bird made a first down on the three. An end run lost five yards before Bird passed to Kelly for the tying tally. Sullivan then knocked down the pass that would have given Charlestown its first victory over South Boston since its 6-0 verdict in 1936. Charlestown battled Southie to a 13-all tie in 1943.
