I S-A THE BOSTON SUNDAY GLOBE-JUNE 20, 1948 You May Be Getting Off and On Subway Cars at loston Common Station 4 Boston to Raze Part of El, Build New Section of Subway and Combine Boylston and Park St. Stations Getting rid of the El pillars will have the same effect as widening this part of Washington at. Some say it will raise property values. Certainly it will make houses and apartments By K. S.

BARTLETT Last week Gov. Bradford signed a bill authorizing the Boston Transit Department to spend $30,000,000 to raze part Of the Washington St. elevated structure, build an additional two-track subway between the Park and Scolla3r sq. stations and turn the present Park st. and Boylston st.

stations into one big station with greatly enlarged platforms. The combined Park st. and Boylston st. station may be renamed "Boston Common Station." turnstyle, depositing your dime. Then you'd step on a car which by then may be air-conditioned or at worst will pretty certainly have electric fans.

The construction work will be done by the Boston Transit Department and a contractor it hires after of course. Or it might "farm out" part of the work to the M. T. which, of course, will take over the addition when finished. The State Planning Board has also worked on the plans.

Here's what will happen as the plans now stand. Modifications and additions, such as the possibility of an escalator to the surface of the Common, or minor changes of route and location of stations are likely. The thing which will affect most way connecting "Boston Common Station" with the proposed Boston Common Garage. It probably will reduce traffic accidents. The tunnel extension will not follow the exact route of the present structure. A large patt of i.

will run under Stiawmut the rest under Washington at. Actual drilling of the tunnel extension will start approximately below Kneeland at. The trains now reach ground level near Oak at. and continue up the incline to the main elevated structure. M.

T. A. officials said last week that the plan is to tear down the ancient elevated terminal platforms, passage ways, stairways to the street, etc. at Dudley at. The new Dudley street station will be underground.

A good part of the new tunnel will go under public lands, some of them owned by the M. T. A. itself. "This tunnel," says one of the advocates of the plan, 'could be built with a minimum interfererre with rapid transit operations.

Attempting to build a subway entirely under Washington it. would not only be more expensive but would involve more interference with the service." The cost of this part of the job Is estimated at $19,000000. The Boston Common garage, of course is a separate proposition. Parlous proposals for the actual layout have been made. The artist's conception reproduced with this story is based on a twin circle design of at least two levels.

Cars would be parked in each circle in spiral rings so that any car would be available immediately. The levels would be connected by ramps. The new subway plans might mean some modification of the garage layout. In any case it has been promised that the surface of the Common will be restored, flower.beds laid out. trees replanted when possible or other types substituted if necessary.

The Common, say proponents of the plan, will still be beautiful and show few indications of the garage below. The new two-track subway and the combined station is expected to solve many of the transportation problems in the Tremont-at. tube. Statisticians estimate that nearly 170.000 passengers are carried between Boylston and Park at. daily.

Perhaps 70,000 of them travel during the rush hours. M. T. A. officials believe the building of this additional subway will "eliminate the bottleneck at the nerve center." You'll travel a lot faster from, say Lechmere Cambridge, to Copley when it is completed, they insist.

The enlarged platforms at Seollay sq. should eliminate much of the rush hour congestion there. "The greatest improvement in subway service in a quarter of a century" is what Carroll L. Meins of the board of public trustees of the M. T.

A. thinks will be brought about by the changes. MORE UNDERGROUND OPERATIONSMr. Quinn's conception of the ex. tension of the Washington.st.

stations and the wide ening and extension of the platforms at Park st. and Boylston st. so that they will form one station. The new subway between Park at. and Sco llay sq.

will cost approximately $11,000,000 and will pass under the new Court House. There will be a larger platform at Scollay too. It is possible that a connection with the Court House basement will be made so that lawyers, Court House employees, witnesses, jurors and others won't have to climb the Steep slope of Pemberton sq. The extension of the ton-st. tunnel and She elimination of another section of the elevated structure means that the section which begins just this side of the Dover-st.

station and extends a little beyond Dudley st will be torn down. The tuhnel will be extended beyond Dudley st. Then it will come up again and be joined to the present elevated section by a very short new stretch. The trains will go on to Forest Hills as at present. Later it is hoped to get rid of this section, too.
