A SHOULD PAY ALL. BOARD OF WORKS AND THE MARIA I STREET BRIDGE. They Think the Government Should Pay an the Cost of it-The Committer will go Back EeddenUofHackrazi Art. ao sot Wait it Hade Public The of works are not satisfied with the offer the government has made In reference to the bridges, and the committee of aldermen and Kl-aens'wlll again go to Parliament If iil with the matter. The matter came, up-yesterday, when the letter from the department of public works, referred from the city ccuncil was read.

The engineer stated that there was no doubt now that Maria and Theodore: streets was an original concession road, laid out many years ago, and according to precedent the government should bear the entire coat of a new bridge instead of asking the to bear one-third. The government's offer to hand Mackenzie avenue over to the city, to be opened as a public street, caused considerable discussion. The engineer did not think the rest-dents of Mackenxe avenue wanted the street made public, but wished It closed at one end. Ei-Mayor McDougaL one of the real-dents on the street, expressed the same opinion. While the sidewalk, he would be open to the general pubjlc as a thoroughfare, they wished the roadway closed at one end, an 1 would keep It in order themselves.

Aid. Champagne and two or three others thought that the street 'should be made a public one. The offer of the department to bear the' same share of the cost of asphalting the, approaches to Sappers bridge as private citizens would bear was considered a fair one. In regard to the other matters Aid. Bell moved, seconded by Aid.

Dal-glish, that the committee wait on the government again. This motion car ried. The petition of the Trades and Labor Council asking for the appointment of a practical scaffold inspector was re erred to the engineer to report on. The claim of $100 damages by Taylor lie Velty for injuries to MYm. Greer and a companion for alleged injuries received and damage to a buggy on the bridge on Duke street, through a pile of stones preventing them getting out of the way of an electric car.

was referred to the advisory committee, i O. E. R. and Syenite. The letter of the Street Railway refusing to pay their share of the eo3t and the annual amount agreed upon, If a Telford-Syenite pavement were laid on Sussex street, as theydld not consder it of a permanent nature.

came up. Aid. McGuire said that it rested with the city engineer If Telford-Syenite were a permanent pavement or not. Rather, said the englnerr, it rests with the agreement with the Railway Company. The agreement defines a permanent pavement as one of natural or artificial stone, with a rubble stone foundation.

Telford-Syenite, under this agreement, was a permanent pavement, he thought. On motion the letter was referred to the city solicitor. The Railway Company asked for leave to construct a side track on Theodore street, opposite Rideau Rink, where cars could be kept In waiting after hockey matches. Theodore street was considered too public for this, and on suggestion tf the engineer Aid. Hastey moved, seconded by Aid.

McGuire, that Duffer in street be offered for the purpose, the tracks to be, removed when required bi the city. jA communication for the. chief of police evidently was mis-directed and came to the board of works. It caused niuch amusement. It was from L.

M. Fortier of the corner of Cambridge and Maria streets; who wanted active measures taken to trace some boys who had been throwing stones on his lawn. For Snow Cleaning. )Ald. McGuire moved, seconded by Aid.

Wallace, that a foreman be appointed to superintend the snow clean-ins of each ward, the same as last year, the finance committee were authorized to place a sum at the disposal of the treasurer sufficient to pay off Jhe snow cleaners after each storm. The engineer was- Instructed to ask for tenders for syenite. Those present were Aid. Champagne, Hastey, Davis, Bell, Dalglish, Wallace and McGuire. FALLOWTIELD NEWS.
