Born in Dixon, she received' her B.A. degree from Vassar in 1895,1 specializing in history. She contin-1 Led graduate study at Cornell and at the Sorbonne, Paris. She received her Ph.D. from Cornell in 1907.

Prof. Orvis came to Wellesley College as an instructor in history in 1899 and in 1920 was appointed to the chairmanship of the departrtent of history and political science. She served on many important committees of the college, including those on college problems, the natiorial emergency. and on the committee which inaugurated the honors system and on graduate instruction. As a community membeeshe rep.

resented her precinct in Wellesley town meetings beginning in 1937. In 1925 she founded Hathaway Eouse Bookshop. a cooperative store, and was chairman of its board of trustees. She also served from 1920 to 1925 as executive secretary of the SocietY to Eliminate Economic Causes of War. Prof.
