Imagine him offering only million bucks for Johnny Bench! The Cincinnati Reds promise two million for Reggie Jackson.

The whole thing is ridiculous and nobody knows it any better than Finley who, as usual, got a little carried away again when he saw Bench put a ccuple of baseballs into orbit during Wednesday's AlfiStar contest in Washington. Finley, who never does anything quietly when a flourish will do, wrote out a check the Reds for a million dollars, handed it to Pat Harincn of the Cincinnati Post Times Star, and to'd him to gc see if he could swing the deal. Discover the carefree comfort of Electric Heating in a Gold Medallion Home There's a marvelous new Way to heat your It's quiet and rouble free. It keeps you perfectly warm and comfortable in any weather Walls, drapes and furnishings stay remarkably clean. Electric a big part of the joy of living in a Gold Medallion Home! Finley knew the Reds would never go for it anymore than he would or if somebody came along and offered him Fcrt Knox plus Aristotle Onassis for young left anded hitter who plays right i I considers making a cash dea.

ncw for Jackson, he'd better be ready to leave Oakland with him. By pulling that grandstand gesture for Bench with his check, Finley earns Cincinnati's everlasting thanks for making it a little tougher for it to deal with its 21-year-okl- catching prodigy who well could be the urst ballplayer ever to shoot for a salary anyway. Finley Helps Himself Big gestures are nothing new for Charlie 0, though. He makes 'em all the time. docs have those streaks of supreme generosity now and then but every time examine his motive you discover a curious thing.

It's always for the personal betterment of Charles 0. Finley. Like his offer sometime ago of a 10-y'ear contract to Bill Rigney. That's right, 10 years- two on the field and eight in the front office. Charlie always dees things in a big way.

He once signed Frank Lane to an eight-year contract. Finley knows Rigney always Iras been close to the Giants. Wouldn't that look nice for his San Francisco competitor If harlic could say to him, look I have under a new 'car contract? Bill Rigney isn't the kind to do a thing like that to his riends in San Francisco. He urned Finley's offer down, but a fellow Rig doesn't have to worry. be back managing in the majors again next he chooses Major League Results-Standings Press International National League East W.
