Schools were closed in many Greater Boston communities because of the storm. The sea surged a foot deep over Wharf at high a. m.marooning apartment dwellers there and floating several small boats onto the dock.

With gusts well over 50 miles an hour driving be' fore them, the causeways from Quincy to Squantum and to Houghs Neck were under a foot of water a half-hour before high tide. Surf smashed over the seawalls at Wollaston and Winthrop, but police reported that the effect was "more spectacu-. lar than damaging." At Charles River Dam the tide measurement at pointwas 13.92 feet. This was 3.85 feet over normal, at a sheltered point. Where wind and waves were unimpeded the ex-.
