He carries a joyful message from the Soviet Pioneers (children's organization) and the young builders of Communism and tells stories of their happy life.

With him returned the Christmas tree under the name of Winter Tree. It so happened that Stalin was born Dec. 21 and so this was the date when Father Frost used to make his appearance. The festive season then continued to New Year's Day, providing a secular disguise for the ceremonies which expressed the religious feelings of the people. Father Frojt in Satellites A little less thana decade ago, when the Soviet dictatorship created its worst frustration and despair in the satellite nations, Father Frost suddenly arrived in those enslaved countries, too.

The entire propaganda machine of each Communist state was brought into action. Year after year the regimented press in the satellite countries would report that Father Frost had started his journey across the Soviet Union and would soon arrive in say Poland, Bulgaria or whatever the country might De. For example on Dec. 17, 1952, Eude Pravo, a Two chaplains will address symbol of the blessings which were bestowed upon the hapless nations of the Communist world by the Soviet Motherland and especially by Father Stalin who would send Father Frost to the good people of the Communist world. Frosty Reception in Hungary Despite the clever use of symbols -and traditions, the tremendous propaganda campaign of the regimes notwithstanding Father Frost met with a ra'thor frosty reception in some countries.

The Hungarians just did not go for him at all. But he came year after year with the full-Kremlin-directed-support of schools, press and radio until Stalin died in March, 1953. From that year on one could notice a gradual shift in the satellite countries from Father Frost to Santa Claus and to truly religious celebration of Christmas. On Dec. 28, 1956 a Prague Communist newspaper carried the first report on a religious Christmas celebration since the Kremlin established the Communist regime in Czechoslovakia in 1948.

"On Christmas Eve," the article read, "the freshly snow-covered streets of Prague were filled with BELIEVERS.hurrying to be on time for the HOLY midnight Mass. And they were right to hurry because the churches of Prague were FILLED TO THE LAST SEAT. In the Church of the Virgin Mary on Charles sq. a group of 36 children played the charming Biblical scene of the birth of Christ." This rather surprising report in a Communist newspaper Was spotted by East Europe, a monthly published by the Free Europe Committee. East Europe also provided two perhaps even more amazing examples.

A few weeks after the bloody revolt of October, 1956, the Hungarian Communist regime of Premier Kadar printed a lavishly decorated Christmas issue of the party paper Nepszabadsag. In that story each member of the crowd which had demanded the release of the robber Barabbas rather than Jesus is offered a second chance to decide who should be spared. Individually, they all choose to save Jesus; when gathering in a crowd again they cry once more with a single voice for Barabbas. Purpose in Barabbas Story Obviously the purpose behind the reprinting of the story was to draw a parallel with the revolt of October, 1956, says East Europe, and to imply that the Hungarian people, too, turned into an irrational mob, rejecting their own salvation Communism and calling for what they knew was against their own interests democracy, sovereignty, freedom.
