Oct. 8 (AP) The University of Maine football forces defeated the University of New Hampshire, 26-13, for their first victory in 10 years in the inter-state rivalry. The Maine Bears came from behind after a slow start to score a pair of touchdowns in the second period and two more in the third and final quarters.

New Hampshire took a 7-0 lead after five minutes of play when Bruce Mather, the Wildcats' ace passer, pitched a 20-yard touchdown aerial 'i Ed Fraser nnd George Kachavos place-kicked the extra point. But Maine got rolling early in the second period and scored twice on a 60-yard pass from Hal Marden to Bob Whytock, and a 75-yard run-back of a punt by Reggie Lord. In the third quarter, Gene Sturgeon climaxed a long Maine drive featured by plunging into the end zone from one yard out. Gordon Pendleton, a sophomore fullback, bucked over for another Maine score shortly before New Hampshire completed the scoring on an end run by Bobby Gage with five minutes remaining in the finale. To make the defeat more sorrowful, Senior Ed Clasby of Natick suffered a fractured ankle late in the game and probably is done for the season. This, occurred after Clasby had taken over Butch Songin's quarterback job in the fourth period and sparked B. C. on its only sustained drive of the afternoon. Coach Myers had decided to make Clasby his quarterback against Mississippi next Friday night before the accident.

The irony of this absolute defeat (in, a game for which B. C. was the favorite) was that Penn State used a passing game to rout the aerial-minded Eagles. more fZtim Once Songin pitched to Gould on the State 15, but the play was recalled for a back in motion. Principal items were a 14-yard run by fullback Charley Kent and three Agganis passes a 19-yarder in collaboration with Whelan, a 26-yarder to Ltuter, and the payoff to Whelan from a spread formation.

Harry's throw to Whelan again at the start of the last period covered 36 yards all told, the last 30 on Bobby's grass-scorching run. Touchdown No. 5 came on a four-play march from 35 yards out, Agganis tossing from the 21 to Whelan who was going down the left and running 13 yaifls. Agganis took a Kelley heave on his own 41 and went up to the Colgate 14 before he was hauled down.
