5- James W. Newton, for many years resident and business man of Boston, and prominent Dartmouth DIES IN FLORIDA -James W. Newton, retired businessman. alumnus, died here at his home after a long illness. He was 91 years old.

A native of Vermont, he later moved his. family to Hanover, N. H. where he attended the public and Episcopal parish schools. He was graduated from Dartmouth College in 1886, and his college class elected him "President for Life" in which capacity he served for 36 years.

In 1951, he organized and directed its 65th reunion. After working for five years with W. B. Clark's bookstore in Boston, he joined the office equipment firm of Yahman and Erbe, of Rochester, N. in 1891.

Seven years later he vas made manager of the Boston office, and retained that position until his retirement in 1931 after 40 years service with the company. A loyal alumnus of Dartmouth, he presented his Alma Mater a stand of colors including the all official ceremonial 0C- College Flag which was adopted casions. In 1926, Mr. Newton gave the D. tmouth Outing Club 22 acres of land from his ancestral home at Norwich, Vt.

He served as director and vice president of the Boston Rotary Club, president of the Dartmouth Club of Boston, first president of the Dartmouth Club of Winter Park, and also was a member of the University Club of Boston, the City Club of Boston, and the Woodland Golf Club of Newton, Mass. He has lived here since 1933, and has been a trustee of the Unitarian church. in Orlando. His first wife died in 1924, and his second wite in 1942. He was married in 1945 to the former Genieve Marie Allen, of Springfield, who survives him.

Alfred M. Tozzer Ex-Harvard Professor Was Famed Retired Harvard Prof. Alfred M. Tozzer, noted anthropologist, died today at his home, 7 Bryant Cambridge, following a short illness. He was 77.

Recognized as one of the leaders in his field for the past half-century, he received his A.B. degree from Harvard in 1900 and his Ph.D. shortly thereafter. From 1902 to 1949 he was member of the Harvard faculty, beginning as an instructor in anthropology in 1905, rising to an assistant professor in 1912 and full professor and chairman of the department of anthropology in 1921. He also served as John Hudson professor of archeology.

Since his retirement in 1949 he has continued his activity in research, He was a pioneer in the field of Mayan archeology and ethnology. Between 1902 and 1913 he led several expeditions into the jungles of Yucatan and Guatemala. He is famed for his study of the Lacandon Indians and for his translation of the 'Landa manuscript. At the time of his death Prof. Tozzer had just completed a monumental synthesis of middle American pre-history.

He spent 35. years on the staff of Harvard's Peabody Museum and held the title of curator of middle American archeology and ethnology at the Dr. Tozzer was the father of Tozzer Lincoln, Boston's top figure skater in the 1930's. served major in the Air Service World War I and in World War II as head of an Office of Strategic Services organization in Honolulu. His wife, the former Margaret Tenney Castle, is a Honolulu native, and the Tozzers, together with their daughter, Joan, for.
