No show had been as much anticipated as this; the whole engagement had been sold out by last Thursday, and the opening night curtain was raised at 7:30. an hour earlier than usual. The verdict? By Rodgers and Hammerstein standards, and by what the public expected, a near miss.

But nonetheless a bis and opulent show, with some good tunes, good actors, splendid dancing, and exciting moments. Where the show goes iff, as I see it, is in the startling lack of much wi: or humor and in the plot which, by attempting to cover too much ground, is thin all 'round. Plenty of people, but not enough about some people. All the same, "Me and Juliet, like "Allegro," is sure to start off on Broadway as a sold-out smash. on tne magic of the Rodgers and Hammerstein label, and for soma other reasons of cast and detail.

But whether it ultimately will pay off the tremendous investment only time will tell. You'll find no prediction here. "Me and Juliet" is a show of enormous technical complexity, a study of theatre people represented by a company playing a smash musical hit called "Me and Juliet." It has a musical-within-a-musicaL and all the scenes are in an imaginary theatre: on stage, back stage, lounge, box office and even a light bridge. The plot follows two main lines: (1) the romance of Jeanie, a chorus girl, and Larry, an assistant stage manager, and the ensuing near-murder by a heavily-muscled and insanely jealous electrician, Bob, who regarded Jeanie as his girl; (2) tha attachment of stage manager Mac, who sternly would never woo a gal in his own show, for Betty, a dancer, who sexily breaks down his resolve. In between are glimpses of star temperament and ego, some small change of show business mores and attitudes, all spiced with some of the sentimentality which, occasionally appears in R.

and and interlarded with rehearsed or fully performed bits from tha imaginary show. Even Rodgers and Hammerstein, and their greatly gifted director, George Abbott, have not been able to overcome totally the extreme difficulties of such a plot Their first act is slow and not a little dull, though interest and pace rise as the show goes along. Like Sidney, the other electrician, you never can make much sense out of the show-within-a-show, which probably was intentional, though there is a tartly parodistic chorus in the lounge about the imminent death of the theatre. Isabel Bigley, so very, very prettv, is cast perfectly as the gentle little Jeanie, and her vis 8 vis, Bill Hayes, is all that a young lover should be. Ray Waiston gives a properly crisp, matter-of-fact portrayal of a stage manager; Mark Tawson is fear-somely real as the psychotic end of the triangle, and Jackie Kelk is as amusing as he can be as a stage-struck candy vendor.

But Joan McCracken is the personality girl of "Me and Juliet," and her single dressing room number, "It's Me," sends up an overdue sky rocket, and gets the real big appiause. The music, I think, will prove mostly to be solid and enduring stuff, especially "No Other Love," one of those "natural" tunes which are Dick Rodgers' hallmark. "Keep It Gay" is another appealing-melody, and so are "Marriage Type Love." "That's the Way It Hap. pens" and "I'm Your Girl." Robert Alton's dances are the strongest component of the show as spectacle, and when the boys and girls have full stage and costumes to brighten things up, those dances are an eye-filling marvel of grace and whirling precision. Jo Miel-ziner's settings must have cost plenty of pnir" headaches, to make all the ntxetiary changes, and they are magnificently effective.

Miss Sharaff made up in color contrasts what she could not have in design, for the rehearsal costumes, and used up all the spectrum for the fancy dress. MARJORY ADAMS Movie Question Box What is Patsy Kelly doing now and please tell me where to reach her? Mrs. M. J. K.

A The last I read about Patsy was that she may make a TV appearance with Tallulah Bankhead in the near future. I do not have her. address, as she has not made films for some time. Her first picture was "Going Hollywood." Before that she was well known on the stage, especially in such revues as "Vanities" and "Sketch Book." Patsy was best known in the short comedies sne made with tie late Thelma Todd. Please tell me about Ron Hagerthy of "The Stooge," Larry Blake and John Hart.

Eve. A Ron Hagerthy is his real name. He was born in Aberdeen. S. 21 years ago, but moved to Glendale, before he was old enough to go to school.

He attended Glendale City College and is married to the former Patti Taylor, his schoolboy sweetheart. His current film is Warner's 3-D "Charge at Feather River" in which Guy Madison and Frank Lovejoy appear. Ron's pictures include "Starlift." "Force of Arms" and "I Was a Communist for the FBI." I have no biographies on Blake or Hart, who appear for variouf studios. rr.l A. mltJi0 rim'3'rjr'i-lm9 WW 9 I lat 5-i706 p.
