She had been ill for four years, and was confined for the last few months to her bed in the big home Martin had bought in Baltimore, Other Obituaries on Page 25 Sixty-Two Sixty-Two Market Near Another 1952-53 High By RADER WINGET YORK, March 14 (AP)TINE stock market pointed up this week toward a 1952-53 high. It didn't make the grade, but at the end of the week it stood only a short distance away from a new record. All week the stock market displayed surprising resistance to unexpected news, and at the same time it capitalized fully on all the good news it could find.

When Czech jets shot down an American and Russian jets downed a British bomber in rate incidents in Germany, the stock hesitated but didn't break. Precautionary selling on the news was noted, but it was readily absorbed. That show of resistance heartened the bulls. It also put the market into a position to respond with an advance to good earnings and dividend reports. The Associated Press average of 60 stocks gained $1.20 on the week, the third best weekly advance this year, and it closed at $115, only $1.50 away from the high for 1952- 53 established last Jan.

5. That peak, incidentally, is the best for the average in nearly 23 years. But the very fact that the market is up again in that high level is giving trouble. Those who accumulated stocks at those peak prices stand ready to sell in many instances as soon as their stock shows a profit. Once before, back in early February, the market challenged the highs of the year and didn't make it.

There's a lot more optimism in Wall Street right now than there has been for many weeks. A rising market itself always seems to generate optimism that there will be a further rise. That's the case now. For some time warnings have been voiced that selling to get cash for income tax payments would have to be gotten out of the way before the market could rise. It's out of the way now.

And there is the perennial hope for what is known as the Spring rise. Spring is less than a week away. Bullishness is not unanimous. Some investment advisers are cocking a wary eye at possible business recession this year because of the government's drive against inflation. That's on a longer-term basis, however, and doesn't rule out further immediate progress in the market.

No Rush to Buy Stocks at Lower Down Payments NEW YORK, March 14, (AP)Buying stocks in Wall Street is easier, now that the down payment has been cut, but there been no rush to get into the stock market. For two years until last Feb. 24. the down payment in buying stocks was 75 percent. Then it was cut to 50 percent.

It was a move long advocated in Wall Street where the restriction is regarded as mostly political and not an economic necessity. A spot check in Wall Street shows that the increase in business has varied widely between various brokerage houses. Some brokers of course do little or no business on margin and others specialize in it. And the increases ran from zero to 10 percent and on up to as much as 40 percent. Those are increases.

A broker who does 25 to 35 percent of his business in margin is considered in the high brackets. How can you buy stocks on margin? It is as easy as opening a charge account in a department store. You have to give certain personal details such as name and address, and business and bank refin extending credit to a dead-beat erences. A broker isn't interested a any more than a department store is. Suppose you are buying 100 shares of stock selling at $40 a share, That's $4000.

You put up $2000 of your own money, (You used to have to kick in with $3000.) The broker then will lend you the remaining $2000 and charge an interest rate that will vary from 4 to 6 percent depending on your credit rating, the town you are in, and the type of securities you buy. You then own the stock and get the dividends when paid. But the broker retains physical of the stock. If the price drops to possession $30 from $40 a share, you have to talk with your broker about more cent. margin Your up to a broker miximum of 50 has the right to sell your stock to protect his loan.

On the day that margins were lowered, Feb. 24, volume on the New York Stock Exchange went up sharply. That week, the daily average of trading came to 000 shares, the highest daily average for any week in the previous two years. Since then volume has been unexceptional. Currently, brokers have around one and a third billion dollars loan to customers to buy stocks on margin.

But that amount is only a trifle more than one percent of the 000.000,000 value of all securities listed on the New York Stock Exchange. Wholesale Commodity Prices Up 4th Week TINE YORK. March 14 (AP)Associated Press index of important commodity rose this week for the fourth prices, consecutive week. The 35-commodity index stood at 179.71 compared with 178.56 last week and 186.56 in the same week a year ago. Increases were recorded by food, cotton and non-ferrous metal prices.

Lower were industrial, livestock and textile prices. The index, with comparable figures for last week and a year ago, follows: Meh 13 Wk ago Yr ago 85 Commodities .129.71 178.56 186.56 Industrials 175.90 176.20 197.23 Food Livesteck 204.12 156.10 150.99 149.78 204.19 214,44 Grains de Cotton. 191.25 190.74 222.69 Textile .159.47 159.97 147.80 Nonfer .208.52 198.63 209.06 You Save TIME and MONEY by reading the Advertisements in the Globe every day.
