But Communist controlled East German newspapers say it was only influenza which developed into pneumonia. Grqtewohls reported illness and the announcement of his coming vacation led to Wester speculation that this might be the- old familiar Communist way of easing him out of office. WASHINGTON, Dec. 21 (AP) A study of Air Force orders for B-36 type planes showed today more than, one-third of the 10-engine giants will be equipped only for reconnaissance. This emphasis on target intelligence appears to come from two major factors: 1. The importance of placing each atom bomb where it will be most effective, because of the cost of the bomb and the expense of delivering it. 2.

Realization of the difficulty of searching out targets in the one probable enemy Russia because of the distance, vast area, rugged terrain, weather and scarcity of information. The reconnaissance version of the B-36 is the RB-36. It is alike in nearly all respects except that it is not to bomb. Thus far the Air Force has announced orders for J70 B-36 planes and is expected to announce shortly orders for at least 34 more. Of those, nearly 80 either were ordered as RB-36s or as B-3ffs to be converted to the reconnaissance version.

The Air Force restricts informa tion about production of the big planes. Some fair estimates indicate the current output at about one a week, and total deliveries at about 75. However, the Air Force does not have that many in service. The first 22 built (except for the initial experimental model and one- used for static or failure tests at Wright Field) have been sent back to the factory for modification. The "B-36 began as a six-engine bomber.

Later type engines of greater power than the original 3000 horsepower 28-cylinder types are being installed. In addition, each airplane will have four jet engines, hung in pairs under the wings, which will double the power available in emergencies and give a prospective speed of about 435 miles an hour over the target. The Air Force now has two B-36 groups 7th and 11th operating out of Carswell airbase at Fort Worth, and is sending planes to the 28th Wing being organized at Rapid airbase.
