at THE BOSTON DAILY GLOBE-TUESDAY, JULY 24, 1956 Deaths and Funerals Dr. Alexander Rice NEWPORT. R. July 23 (UP) -Dr. Alexander Hamilton Rice, a physician became world faexploring the tropics in mous South America, died today at his Summer mansion.

He was 80. Dr. Rice, who maintained residences in Paris and New York city, been in failing health for the had month. He died at his 65- past room mansion "Miramar." Dr. Rice's interest shifted to after he finished his internship in geography and exploration soon 1905 at Massachusetts General HosHe went to England and pital.

graduated from the Royal Geology School of Geographical Surveying and Field Astronomy in 1910. During World War I he served with a French military hospital in Paris and with an American ambulance unit before joining the Navy where he became an instructor in navigation, Dr. Rice began preparing for his South American exploration in During the ensuing years he 1899. organized seven expeditions and mapped an area of 500.000 square miles in Columbia, the Amazon in Brazil, and Venezuela. Dr.

Rice, who wound up his South American explorations in said last year that he be1924, lieved man was a long way from space exploration. Born in Boston Dr. Rice received an MD degree from Harvard in 1898. In recent years returned to Harvard as a prohe fessor and founded the Institute of Geographical Exploration at the university. He became a professor emeritus in 1951.

In his last South American expedition, Dr. Rice successfully employed a hydroplane for reconnaisance and air photography and demonstrated the effectiveness of low-power short wave radio to maintain outside communications. For his work he was decorated by the French and Spanish Governments. Dr. Rice's first wife.

Mrs. Eleanor E. Widener, died 1937. He married Mrs. Dorothy Farrington Upham in 1949.

Joseph D. Nyhan MEDFORD, July 23-Joseph D. Nyhan of 826 Fellsway, died this afternoon at the Lawrence Memorial Hospital after a long illness. Mr. Nyhan operated a construction business here for many years prior to his retirement.

He was a life-long resident of Medford. His only survivor is his son. Services will be held at 9 a.m., Wednesday in St. James Church. Prof.

R. W. Fessenden EASTHAM, July Richard W. Fessenden, 54, of North Amherst, professor of chemistry at the University of Massachusetts since 1931, died today of a heart attack, while vacationing here with his family. He leaves his widow, the former Bertha E.

Pulley, and two sons, Richard and Robert. Services will be held Thursday in Amherst. Edgar M. Osgood HOLYOKE, July 23-Edgar Osgood, 74, of 72 North Pleasant, who retired as paymaster the Holyoke Water Power Co. 1952 after 42 years' service, died late Sunday night following long illness.

Mr. Osgood was chairman of Holyoke Republican City Committee from 1936 to 1944. and served as alderman from Ward 3 for a number of years beginning 1932. He was born in Holyoke, graduated from Holyoke High in 1900 and attended Cornell University. He was past district deputy grand master and past master of William Whiting Lodge of Masons, past high priest of the Mt.

Holyoke Chapter, and past president of the Holyoke Lions Club. Besides his wife, the former Anna Dunn, he leaves one son, Edwin M. of West Springfield: two sisters. Mrs. Peter S.

Sinclair and Mrs. Pearl L. Gosling, both of South Hadley; and two brothers. G. Raymond Osgood of Agawam and Fayette C.

Osgood of Wakefield, R.I. Services will be held at his Wednesday afternoon. Rev. Norman R. Farnum Jr.

will officiate. Percy A. Staples HERSHEY. July 23 (AP)Percy A. 73, chief executive of the condy interests of the late Milton S.

Hershey, was found dead today in his suite at the Hotel Hershey. He apparently died in his sleep during the night. When Staples was chairman and president of the ershey Chocolate Corp. and head of the Hershey Trust the Milton Hershey School and the over S. Hershey Foundation, the supervising agency.

Staples born in Portland, and was left an orphan at 12. After finishing public school he entered the Protestant Episcopal Academy at Philadelphia and then the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Before becoming associated with Hershey, Mr. Staples 1 worked on engineering and business projects in the east and middle west. Hershey, in the early 1920's, named Mr.

Staples to take charge of the Hershey Cuban sugar interests. As general manager, Staples rebuilt and reorganized six of Hershey's sugar and public utility properties in Cuba to a point where they produced more than three times Hershey's vast requirements for sugar in chocolate making. He Kept License On Appeal; Dies In Auto Crash Albert N.C.. July Sellers, 23 25, (UP). of Lee County was convicted of several driving violations several months ago, but he was allowed to keep his driver's license because of a pending appeal to the Superior Court.

The appeal will never be heard. Neither will Sellers ever have any more need for the driver's license. Sellers was killed in a highway collision yesterday. State highway patrolmen blamed the accident on high speed on the part Sellers. Eight other persons were injured, two seriously, in the accident on a rural highway near here.

Sellers was convicted in Recorder's. Court on charges of drunken driving, careless and reckless. driving and carrying illegal whisky.
