Page SB--The Robcsoniati. Lumber ton, N.C.. Sunday, June Nursery Manager, Explorer Scout Aid Wood Ducks Fair Bluff News Items BOLTON The development of a wood duck management area has been started at Federal Paper Board Company's J. B. Lattay Forest Tree Nursery and Genetics Center near Lumberton.

Jim Deines, Nursery Supervisor, explained how the idea came about: "A number of abandoned or destroyed duck nests had been discovered in a swampy area located on the nursery grounds. This was an indication that there were ducks in the area, and that they did not have 'proper nesting sites." Deines and Wally Mills, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. H.

Mills, 2201 McMfllan Avenue, Lumberton, decided to remedy the situation. Young Mills, working to gain his Eagle Scout badge assisted Deines in clearing approximately one-half acre in the swamp and planting cover crops of corn, soybeans, and pigeon peas. The logs they got from the swamp were transported to the scout council area where they were used in making benches. Deines and Mills have constructed seven wood duck nesting boxes which will be placed in the area. Some are equipped with metal rat shields to keep out raccoons, snakes, and other predators.

According to Deines, the baby duck will emerge approximately 21 days after the egg is laid. Exactly 24 hours after breaking out of the shell, the duckling will climb the wall of the nesting box and leave the nest. The area will not bje open for hunting but will be strictly for observation and management. Hopefully, it will be well established by Fall.
