1 THE BOSTON GLOBE- TUESDAY, JULY 26, 1960 Deaths and Funerals THE LATE A. E. MATTHEWS-Famous British actor shown, from left, preparing for vaudeville appearance (1950); roasting town council for putting concrete lamp post in front of his 300-year-old cottage (1958); celebrating 90th birthday in costume for TV show (1959). A. E.

Matthews, British Actor, Dies at 90; Played in U.S. LONDON, July 25 (Reuters) could cut quite a actor A. E. Matthews--an inspired character on and offstage--died today at the age of 90. The witty, roguish "Matty" was almost as well known on Broadway as he was here for his portrayal of eccentric lords and other storybook English types.

In his "younger" days--well into his 60's- between the two world wars he was a top romantic lead on Broadway. Matthews died in his sleep at his home in Bushey Heath about 20 miles from London. The actor, hospitalized briefly in February after a mild heart attack, had not been ill lately but had been "unwell" for some time, a friend said. Matthews, Britain's oldest working, to actor, be his appeared final Lon- in don play last year. He played his first stage role here 73 years ago.

Five days after celebrating his 90th birthday last November, spry "Matty" appeared in his first full television play-as eccentric Earl of Lister in "The Manor of Northstad." Famed Ad Libber Matthews' ad-libbing was famous in the theater. He rarely bothered to learn his lines perfectly. "I never take notice of a play," he once said. "If I don't like it, I alter it." During his final London stage appearance, he played from a wheelchair. The producer explained: "The wheelchair will be very useful for pushing him off the stage if he goes on too long." Off -stage, Alfred Edward figure, too.

He liked to garb himself in a checked deerstalker hat, well-worn corduroy trousers, riding boots and a cravat. He also affected an ancient dressing gown tied with a piece of string. Two years ago "Matty" conducted a one-man campaign against officials in Bushey Heath who wanted to put up a modern concrete lamp outside his 300-year-old cottage. Matthews personally filled in the hole dug for the "monstrosity" and sat over the spot in a chair. But two weeks later he lost the battle and the lamp post went up.

Made his name in the London theater at the turn of the century, acting with stars like Ellen Terry Gerald Du Maurier and Marie Tempest. In 1910, he made his first New York appearance-as Algy in "The Importance of Being Earnest." He returned to the United States in 1947 for a six-month tour in his long-running London success, "The Chiltern It was retitled "Yes, M'Lord" in the U.S. and also was filmed. Ten years later, Matthews was still going strong, chalking up his 500th performance in "A Month of Sundays" at London's Cambridge theater and amusing movie- as an addle-pated British admiral in "Carry On Admiral." He married twice. His first marriage ended in divorce.

He had two sons and a daughter. He wed his second wife, Patricia Desmond, in 1940 when he was 70. She is still alive. Matthews kept his slim figure, thick head of white hair and perfect eyesight well into his eighties. Until his last illness he rope, played golf and drove a car.
