The Boston Globe Wednesday, September 1962 Police Seek Motive For Bombing of Auto I 1 I i -yitW if A i State and Somerville police aifted last night the wreckage an automobile blown apart by a bomb yesterday morning while the wife of a convict Was sparking it. She escaped injury. Although no final report had fceen made. State Police Lt Howard Elliott, a bomb expert, said he found packing and wiring from the starter, ipark plugs and generator and that this was in keeping with the use of a dynamite bomb. The car blew up at 10:30 a.m.

Mrs. Grace Petricone, 26, of 2 Canal lane, Somerville, wife of Alexander Petricone, 25, who is serving time at the Middlesex County House of Correction, was backing the car into a space at Canal lane and Connors dr. 1 LJ MRS. The force of the blast sent the hood 50 feet into the air and into a playground, where eight children were playing. None was hurt. A fender also Was torn from the car. Somerville Police Chief Thomas J. O'Brien said it was surprising that Petricone was not killed and that the bomb did not explode while she was driving the car through busy Broadway.

Police theorized that the wires connecting with the bomb' became loose and did not explode until Mrs. Petricone bumped horn button while parking. The blast came after she had driven the car about four miles around the city. shoreman serving time with Petricone for assaulting an operator of a Somerville diner. O'Brien said it appeared also that whoever tried to blow up the car might also have been connected with the attempt on McLean's life before he was sent to prison.

At that time five sticks of dynamite were found attached to the motor of his car. Police received a tip, and the dynamite was discovered before it exploded. Petricone and McLean were suspected of the murder of Bernard McLaughlin, loan shark racket "enforcer" who was shot down in gangland stj-le in Charlestown at noon last Oct' 31. They were freed when the grand jury found no probable cause. Police said Mrs.

Petricone had borrowed Winter's car to drive to a bakery. Winter said the car was his, but police said it was registered to his sister-in-law, Jean O'Brien of Madison Police talked with her husband at the prison in Bil-lerica but could find no motive for the rigging. Chief O'Brien said he believed however, that the bomb was not intended for Mrs. Petricone but for Howard T. Winter of Madison Somerville, a friend who had driven the car to her home earlier.
