THE OCCULT By Colin Wilson: This is a vast book, extremely well researched, which tells you every thing that is known about the occult. Since the very definition of the word means "hidden, I never understood just a this mysterious thing was. I know now that it exists in all of us as a 6th sense, or Faculty and we may develop it through intense concentration. It is also naturally stronger in some people than in others. In fact, the author claims, pg.

63, that exactly 5 per cent, or one in 20 of the human race, are the dominant minority, the born leaders, the same ones who have definite occult powers. After careful perusal of this book, I am positive I am not one of these, but YOU could be, and Colin Wilson will tell you how to know yourself. He starts out with an analytical table, then a long introduction which I found almost the most interesting part of the book. He says we must realize that the Intelligent Universe is not just an accident, as scientists say, but a there is meaning in everything. It is this sense of meaning that spurs man to make the efforts necessary to evolution.

The real science of life reveals data processing on a massive scale. Some Great Intelligence processed this data; the programming of matter must be achieved by waves faster than the vibrations of matter. These are cosmic radiations. There are meanings floating around from which we are ordinarily cut off by habit, ignorance, and dullness of the senses. Some of our esoteric traditions might be superstitions, or they just might be glimvses of these meanings.

Faculty is the sense of objective reality of other times and places, instead of the usual subjective worms' eye view in which we are generally trapped all our lives. Wilson keeps citing examples of people whose Faculty has been awakened in different ways, by dreaming, sex experiences, a shock that mobilized all one's latent forces, extreme exhaustion, or just suddenly, for no reason. Here is one curious fact: Our ancestors of only 2,000 years ago Prettiest thing to unpack anywhere: by "VANITY FAIR, It all femininity and no fuss in no-cling HI nylon i Whirly- swirly lace arid shining licks of satin, topping travel loving gown $13; and pnjrjrnrj, $13. Homer thought the sea the same color as wine. There are no color words in primitive Indo-European speech. In another thousand years our descendants may see a dazzling universe with a dozen colors that do not exist today. We have now reached a point in evolution where man must turn inward to meanings and vibrations that so far have been too fine to grasp. Man must develop positive consciousness.

He has evolved so far through his power to turn his mind into a microscope and concentrate on small details. But this has made him the victim of the small and negative. The Center that I cannot find Is known to my unconscious mind I have no reason to despair Because I am already there Auden Poets are occultists. They are conscious of the mystery of life as the rest of us are not (usually), but we revere them and read their poetry to search for meanings. The author goes from prehistoric man with his shamans right to the present.

He says sorcery came into being 6000 years ago and outstripped shamanism, taking an independent existence. This is bad. A magician is disinterested, a sorcerer a power. All peoples in history have different ways of fathoming the unknown the Magi of Persia, the Gnostics, the Yogi, the Rosicrucians. He goes into detail about the Kabbala, one of the eldest systems of mystical thought, the I Ching, and Tarot cards.

The Kabbala is a guide book for the soul on its way upward but I do not think Christians can accept it. Mr. Wilson is definitely not a Christian though he admits many mystics have been. He keeps harping on getting away from the petty and the routine. Man is a small model of the Universe and vast spaces stretch inside him, but seen as if in a mirror.

In a state of true inspiration, these spaces open up, giving rise to other realities. Some people try to see them by use of psychedelic drugs, but the effect is just the opposite. They turn off awareness. There is a long chapter on adepts and imposters, detailing their lives, and miracles like levitation, cures, prophecies, telepathy, and tran- ssubstantiation. We learn of Cornelius Agrippa, Paracelsus, John Dee, Swedenborg, Mesmer, Casanova, Cagliostro (I enjoyed his life the most though Cagliostro came to a miserable end in a dark dungeon, but he had a wonderful time first), Rasputin, Madame Blavetsy, Yeats, Graves, Edgar Cayce, J.

G. Bennett, H. Price, Bishop Price, and others. A whole chapter is devoted to the Beast Himself, Aliester Crowley. I found him utterly revolting.

Another chapter deals with the history of i a and Lycanthropy, still another with the Realm of Spirits. The last part, titled "Glimpses," is a hopeful outlook into the future, in which the author believes we will solve the mystery. Our human evolution has advanced too a its processes too complicated for our own good, but they can be simplified and consciousness turned toward to understand the vital processes. The enemy of iife is not death, but forgetfulness and stupidity. Man's future lies in the cultivation of Faculty X.
