ROWLEY STATION By ROBERT A. McLEAN Boston and Maine Railroad commuters may be in for a pleasant and in some cases long-overdue surprise. The road this week declared a general depot clean-up, fix-up, patch up campaign. The refurbishing of stations, most now under private ownership, was decreed by the a ssachusetts Dept. of Public Utilities after a two-month survey of railroad properties.

"Some of the stations were satisfactory, and others not-so-satisfactory, and need plenty of attention," said William II. Curley, director of the D.P.U.'s railroad division. "Private owners of stations, which were found to be not in good condition, have been notified to restore them to the required level of maintenance," a railroad spokesman said. D.P.U. division engineer John J.

Kelley and the chief engineer. Thomas K. Dyer, climaxed the survev with a three-day tour of the entire system, "inspecting every foot of property," the line oihcial said. Road's Responsibility Passenger depot facilities must be maintained by new owners as stipulated in sale contracts which must be ap proved by the D.P.U. before the property changes hands, Curley pointed out.

"Any complaints received by the D.P.U. are brought to the attention of the railroad, which then has the responsibility for seeing that the con dition is rectified, he said. Depot waiting rooms must be kept heated, lighted and usable condition, if such facilities were maintained prior to the sale by the railroad, Curley said. And if the existing property is to be demolished facilities must maintained during the waiting period, and new facili- ties provided for 'the future, as long as passenger service is maintained at that station." Curley emphasized that, in' Weston's Weld Wins Green Mt. Tennis Crown BRATTLEBORO, Vt, July ,9 Ed Weld, Weston, Mass.

If and when the clean-up program begins, it will have been a long time coming, according to some irate commuters. Rotting flooring, peeling paint, rutted parking lots and general run-down condition, are a continuing source of irritation to many Massachusetts rail patrons, fortunate enough to still have commuter service. The station in New- buryport, now in private hands, is one case in point. 1 Commuters who drive to the station and park their cars dee which th teU parng jot Look Abandoned Stations in smaller commu- Woodruff-E. A welcome contrast is the large Beverly station, which was recently resold. Though old, the depot interior is clean, and the walks under each rain shelter are well swept. Perhaps the condition faced by the commuters can best be illustrated by a recent incident in the Newburypcrt station.
