Undoubtedly there are Greek translations which would fully cover that point, but we can almost come to the correct conclusion offhand. HV do not as a rule find the Instinct of sportsmanship among highly emotional people.

Where is tho national game nt Spain? Nobody would attempt to call bull-fighting a sport that encompassed fair play. What are the national Karnes of Italy or France? These are the Latin countries and the countries lhat shelter a temperamental high-strung people. The ancient Greeks, who were no more ancient than we are, were a very emotional people. Their writings an well as their whole mythology points to this. And It stands to reason the more temperamental and emotional a person is the more likely would he be tn take seriously to heart a defeat or a setback.

The old Greek athlete was no quitter. No man can bo a emitter and run a mnrathon. Ab we do a good many things, we are pleased to tnlsnuiiie what we call the sporting Instinct.

Fundamentally, there exists In us no such thing. It belongs wholly In the category of acquired virtues. Wo have strong competitive Instincts, Instincts of self-exploitation end 8eif-aggrandijement. It Is not at all likely that while wo wero still In the cave or tree states that we entertained much notions of fair play. Rather, If anthropoid No.

In fact It was the predominant one. One might almost say that everything that occurred was translated In the light of that Instinct. As long as this state existed, there was not much room. It will be seen, for any acquired Instincts of self-suppression to form. The theory Is, and there seems to be no good cause to doubt It, that what one might call civilization did not and could not really begin until the personal fear element was removed.
