Furcolo complained today that newspaper speculation on possible changes in his office staff ''hurt some very good and decent people" by leaving the impression he was not satisfied with their work. The stories "unquestionably hurt many of them," he said, refc rnng to' secretaries who were reported 8S scheduled for promotions following a week-end spent by the governor with a dozen or more of his political cronies at Anaover, N.H., two weeks ago. The governor did not categorically deny that the promotions had been discussed, but he pointed to the fact that one staff member, Miss Margaret M. O'Donnell, is still on the job and the position of director of personnel is now held by another. He also stated he had not discussed with his first secretary, Charles Sloan.

Springfield attorney, the possibility of placing him cn the appellate tax board. Satisfied With Work Furcolo stated he is completely satisfied with the work of his aides while adding, "if any are interested in any promotion I could do for them within their qualifications I would give them every consideration." He indicated some members of his staff were disturbed by the reports they were being moved before they heard about it directly from the governor. His aides constitute, he said, "One of the finest, best and loyal staffs any governor has ever had." Asked if he contemplated starting his second year in office with the same Stan wno servea mm during his first, he stated, "If some staff personnel is interested in remaining on I certainly would want them to do so." One Indication One member, he said, has indicated a desire to leave the governor would not say whether it was for another state job or pri vate employment and he added he would "regret losing him if it becomes necessary. And if he does go he will do so at his own re quest and nothing else," tne gov ernor emDhasized. Relative to the report that his administrative assistant, Charles F.

(Chic) Mahoney, is scheduled to ucceed Frank X. Lang as comrniS' doner of administration, the gov ernor stated: "I have nt heard from anyone that plans re tirement. "If Frank retires for some reason and if Mahoney were interested. Furcolo continued, "I would give him every consideration. No Demotions He said the same "double, if" could be used to describe the pos fibility of his secretary, Kermit Mornssey, Amherst professor, succeeding William H.

Bixby as budget commissioner. Bixby. the governor stated, also has not indicated he is about to leave. The changes reported in the governor's staff were considered by some to be for the purpose of strengthening his position both from an executive position and with the Legislature, and were not described as demotions In any manner, Several of the reported changes would merely move gubernatorial secretaries from their present dimes to the office of administration and finance, an executive department, now run in some divi sions by holdovers from previous administrations. Tointing out that the English will was executed just three daysj before Meyer died at the countess home on June 28, Roy claimed that it was done while the deceased was "in the shadow of the grave." Meyer In Oxygen Tent It was while Meyer was "in an oxygen tent and at a time when his family and business associates were barred from her (the coun tess') apartment," he told the court. Roy further claimed he had evi dence that hte solicitor who drew the last minute document received instructions in the handwriting of the countess and that she was the one who ordered a business asso. ciate of Meyer to transfer funds from Boston to England. Meyer, also of Eng land, was cut off with a mere si He left the entire estate to his five children. The English will leaves the bulk of the estate to the countess. Atty. William Arthur Dupce representing the interests of the countess, said that he had been in structed ot appeal any action taken in court today and to further file for recovation of any conclusive action by Judge Reynolds. "We might as well start the ball rolling here," the probate judge observed. "If England is a little dilatory, Norfolk County isn't." He heard witnesses to the 1956 will, including Irene Hunyer of Brockton, Meyer's personal bookkeeper and also bookkeeper for the South African Trading one of Mayer's Boston firms. She testified Meyer left the country Dec.

6, 1956, to visit his daughter in England and was taken ill Dec. 19. She identified a series of letters from overseas, including one in which Meyer indicated his intention of returning to America. The immigration situation that Lady Cathcart precipitated came about when she left her husband, the Earl of Cathcart, and 'eloped to this country in 1926 with the youthful Earl of Craven. She was denied entry on grounds of "moral turpitude though the earl was admitted.

The immigration case caused an uproar on both sides of the At lantic and gained sensational publicity for the countess.
