1 Lions Score in 2d, 3d; Whip Brown, 13-6 By John Ebinger Columbia opened its football season at Baker Field yesterday with its traditional game against Brown. Though the sun tended to dry out the playing field the turf was still soggy from Friday's rain. Approximately 10,000 fans were in the stands. Columbia had only five backs of varsity cali ber to oppose Skip Stanley's first Brown eleven. The Lions won.

13-6. FIRST PERIOD Stewart Mcllvennan, Columbia fullback, was injured in the first three minutes, but stayed in the game and later got away for an 18-yard punt return that was fol 2 lowed by a Governali to Kelleher pass for 20 yards. That brought the ball to Brown's 35. Two Gov ernali to Kelleher passes went awry and the Lions were forced to kick. Moments later, however, Columbia started another drive that wasn't halted until Margarita intercepted another Governali nip on the Brown 11 and hurried it Reception Committee Fordham tacklers break through to nail Hagerman, Southern Methodist halfback (arrow), for a 3-yard loss in first period of yesterday's game at I'olo Grounds.

SECOND PERIOD Columbia passes gunned a third march that came to a halt when Ray Makofske dropped back from tackle for a futile place kick. Columbia got a fourth chance for a tally when Sinton blocked Margarita's punt and Maack recovered on Brown's 23. Two passes by Governali, the first incomplete, resulted in a Columbia touchdown, Mcllvennan taking the toss on the three. Makofske converted. Neither team could develop a consistent attack the remainder of the period.

Harvard, playing it opening game away from home for the first tinr.e rinre 183, ruled a slight favorite. Penn won, 19-0 FIRST PERIOD Penn started a touchdown crive when Davis intercepted Lee's pas on the Penn 37 and ran back to his 48. StitT plowed through center for successive runs of 16 and 9 to Harvard's 27. A Gilford-Davis pass added 8. Stiff picked up 4 more and then went off tackle for 15 and the touchdown.

Davis converted. The Quakers recovered a fumU soon after the kickoff and drove to Harvard's but were back en th 22 because of a bad pass from ctn-ter as the period ended. Score: Penn 7, Harvard THIRD PERIOD: (Well passed yards to Nelson. Miiler picked up 5 and Stiff hul-dercd through the line for 11 and a first down on the Harvard 2. Odell dived over for the tC'ueh-down. Bruett's attempt to kick the point failed and Penn led, 13-0. After an exchange of punts backed Penn to its own midway in the period, iff did booted the Quakers out when he stood in his own zone and punted 77 yards to the Harvard 15.

A moment later Harvard kicked, to the Penn 42. With Stiff tearing off heavy gains and Kane alternating, Penn ripped off three first downs to the Harvard 26 i tfc period ended. Score: Penn 13, Howard 9. FOURTH PERIOD Four minutes after the reriod opened, Brundage slipped eff left tackle and galloped 66 yards for the Quakers third touchde-wn. Nolan's place kick missed.

Harvard caught fire -after the kick-off. Lt-e passed 31 yards to Mackinney on the Penn 4.0. Johnson shot another to Mackinney who got down to the 15. Lee picked up eight yards off tackle, but Per.n took possession on the seven when Lee's pass to Mackinney was batted down. Final Score: Penn 19, Harvard 6 Brown needed only six minutes to get a touchdown with lit-k High, 200 pound fullback, doing the heavy work.

He opened the drive with a six-yard spring and once carried the ball and the entire Columbia line for 14 yards to the three. A Savage to Savignano pass brought the counter. Fidler's kick was short. SECOND PERIOD: Lafayette threatened twice but couldn't score. Starting from his 20 Nagle got loose for 19, then passed to McKnight on the NYU 23.

Nagle lugged to the three, but the Violets held and took over on downs. Nagle intercepted Frank's pass on the Violet 35. A pass, Nagle to Condron, made first on the 18. but again NYU held and In the dying moments of the period Brown worked the ball to the six inch line where the gun stopped the drive. FOURTH PERIOD Maack broke through to toss Saveage for a 13-yard loss as the Brown halfback attempted to throw a fourth-down pass and Columbia took over. The Lions worked the ball up field on running plays. A late Brown drive was halted by Mcllvennan, who intercepted Savage's pass on the Columbia 13 and raced it back to the 21. Just before the gun, the Lions began another threat when McMichael recovered a Brown fumble of Ger-mann's punt on the Bruins' 36. Final score: Colombia 13, Brown 6.

Andrejco, soph halfback, cut loose around end for 35 yards but the play was nullified by a holding penalty that put the Rams back on their own 35. Next Blumenstock, on a delayed buck, pounded through for 19 yards and Filipowicz made it another first down on the SMU 34. But the Mustangs held fast and took the ball on their 31. Ososki, Babula and Cheverko went into the Ram back field and grot a break when Pieculewicz recovered Miller's fumble on the SMU 32.

But Babula was spilled for a 9-yard loss and Davis intercepted Cheverko's pass, romping 44 yards to the Ram 28 before Cheverko saved Fordham by knocking him down. SMU got nowhere passing and a field goal by Campbell from the 39 was not even close. Score: Fordham 0, SMU 0. SECOND PERIOD: A Filipowicz flip to Noble picked tip 32 to the SMU 34. But Baccus intercepted a pass on the 12 and Johnston punted out to Noble on the Fordham 44.

Blumenstock twisted to SMU's 43 and a 5-yard penalty for too much time gave Fordham a first down on the 37. But Ramsey intercepted and ran to the Fordham 30. SMU was helpless and Maley's fourth down toss was nabbed by Satori on the Ram 40. After two 5-yard penalties set Fordham back, Filipowicz faded and pegged to Andrejco, who broke into the clear at midfield. Andrejco made nimble use of interference from there to score standing up on a picture play.

Ososki converted. It was a 5-yard pass nd a 65-yard run. Score: Fordham 7, SMU 0 THIRD PERIOD Johnston got off a 57-yard kick which went out in the coffin corner. Blumenstock punted to Miller, who came back 15 to the Ram 30. Fordham held and took over on the 22.

Filipowicz pitched to Noble on his 37, and he spun to the SMU 37. A penalty and a 6-yard loss pnt the Rams back to the 48, but Filipowicz threw to Iansing on the 20. The Rams got the ball back on the SMU 42 when Cheverko intercepted Miller's pass. Fordham drove to the 18, and when the attack stalled Cheverko missed a field goal from the 25. Soon after. Filipowicz heaved to Noble on the SMU 39.

and the Ram quarterback raced to the 12 as the period ended. Score: Fordham 7, SMU 0. FOURTH PERIOD. This Fordham drive fizzled when Ososki blew a field goal attempt from the 17. The Mustangs began to roll with Johnston banging through the Ram line in 5 out of 6 plays before he was finally hurt.

The charge carried from the SMU 20 to the Ram 49. The Mustangs took to the air with Maley throwing to Simpson who took the ball on the 16 and went over. Pasqua converted to tie the score, 7-7. Babula, back to pass soon after, fumbled when hit and Simpson recovered on the 30. Ganzales went to the 21, but a 5-yard penalty put 'em back to the 26.

Pasqua booted a field goal from the 34, to give the Texans a 10-7 lead with 5 minutes to go. Starting from their 35, the Rams went to the SMU 12 on two passes. Blumenstock plunged to the 10, but Filipowicz was held for no gain and a pass failed. Hudacek toed a field goal from the 17 to tie the score. With 2 minutes to go, Miller fumbled and Kovach recovered on the SMU 45.

The Mustangs were penalized for holding and it was first and 10 for the Rams on the 31. Andrejco hit for 3 but on the next play recovered his fumble for a 4-yard loss. A penalty moved the ball back to the SMU 37. Fordham won when Filipowicz whipped a long pass to Blumenstock, who took the ball on the 4 and went over standing up with 27 seconds to go. Final score: Fordham 16, SMU tHool Git--fs.

THIRD PERIOD Lafayette threatened after Nagle got off a long punt to the NYU 10 and Frank's return kick carried only to his 35. A pass, Nagle to Ziemer, made first down on the 10, but again the Violets held on downs on the seven. Frank kicked to midfield as the period ended. Score: NYU 0, Lafayette 0. FOURTH PERIOD After an exchange of punts Frank kicked to the Lafayette 20.

Ziemer fumbled and Delfino recovered for the Violets on the Maroon 25. Two line plays gained nothing, then Frank passed to Millman on the 10, who crossed standing tip. Consagras failed to convert. NYU threatened in the closing minutes after Rosen recovered Nagle's fumble, but the drive petered out on the four and Rabezak's field goal try was wide. Final score: NYU 6.
