001 03 a. SEIZE 2 CHEWS OF AXIS SHIPS IN COSTA RICA (Copyright 194 by News Syndicate Co. Inc.. San Jose, Costa Rica, March 31. Crews of the German freighter Eisenach and the Italian liner Folia, set afire at Punta Arenas early today, were brought here this afternoon. In the group were 52 Germans and 58 Italians.' The ships were burning fiercely and were expected to sink at their anchorage in the channel. The ships were fired as a party of 40 Costa Rican port policemen began to board them following advices that the Germans and Italians were preparing to sink the vessels and block the channel. The 6,072-ton Felb. and 4,177-ton Eisenach took refuge in Punta Arenas shortly after the war started. Mexico Seems Ready- To Seize Axis Ships. Mexcio City, March '31 Responsible sources in the Ministries of Foregin Relations and the Navy reported tonight Mexico planned to take custody of 12 German and Italian vessels in Mexican ports. Armed naval detachments, these sources said, will take control of the Axis ships as an act of continental defense and of solidarity with the United States. It was reported the action might take place tonight. The Italian ships, freighters and tankers, are distributed as follows: In Tampico: Stelvio, 4,962 tons; Lucifero, 4,500; Genoano, 6,066; Fede, 7384; Atlas, 2,005; Americano, 7,008; Vigor, 6,510; Tuscania, 6,904; Marinao, 5,479; in Vera Cruz: Giorgio Fassio, 6,735. The two German ships are the passenger liner Orinoco, 9,660 tons, in Tampico, and the freighter Hamelin, 4,235 tons, in Vera Cru. Seven other German ships which had taken refuge in Mexican waters made unsuccessful attempts from time to time to run the British blockade. Headed by the scuttled 32,000-ton liner Columbus, they all came to grief. Nazi Ship Sabotaged 'Beyond Repair' Boston, March 31 (IP). Coast Guards said today that every piece of machinery aboard the German tanker Pauline Friederich had been damaged beyond repair. The .vessel was seized here yesterday.
