News. Glance I duce The Martins, the quartet on i his radio show, when they begin a personal appearance engagement 1 at the Roxy, the following Friday I Hannah Lasarow, Los Angeles I television actress, and Will Baltin, program director of the Du Mont I elevision station W2XWV, are engaged Pauline Tiktinsky, who has spent 33 of her 34 years in hospitals as a victim of infantile paralysis, will be wheeled into WOR's studio tonight. There she will appear on Dave Elman's "Contact" program to make an appeal to her old friends to begin visiting her again. Some of the plays, especially the movie adaptations, heard on the Kate Smith hour (WABC-8) this season have been pretty mediocre. But last night, it was different.

Kate presented Henry Hull, best known for his Jeeter Lester in "Tobacco Road," in an original drama, "The Overcoat." by the Russian writer Nicolai Gogol, adapted for radio by Jules Dassin. And right here and now, I'm throwing my hat in the air. It was one of the most fascinating bits of human revelation I've ever heard on the air, beautifully written, and superbly acted by Hull and his supporting cast. The performance was also helped to its rating by the exceptionally fine incidental music Unfortunately, I missed hearing the new comedy team of Minerva Pious and Charlie Cantor on this show, having engagements elsewhere on the dial. But, as they are favorites of mine, I'll be listening next week.

"Discoveries of 1941," featuring Bobby Byrnes' Orchestra Alan Kent, emcee, bowed in last night, brinfring to the mike a pleasing half hour of entertainment. Also featured were his regular vocalists, Jerry Wayne and Dorothy Claire. Both are promising warblers, just as the band itself is an excellent one. But it seemed more than ridiculous to this listener for Bobby to have introduced Fredda Gibson, as a "discovery of 1941." She has been heard on the air certainly for a considerable time.

So, Bobby's joins tte procession. He cortducts a "name-a-tune" contest, in which the fans are asked, in return for a cash prize, to suggest a title for a newly composed song. This one, at least, has the virtue of being a bit different. But sometimes I wonder how radio ever gained listeners in the old days, when all one got out of a program was pleasure. "Your Happy Birthday," a program which gained popularity as a sustaining item, acquired a sponsor last evening, a tobacco company to 10).

This, too, is a money-giver, with weekly awards of $1000. Jimmy Dorsey's fine band and that swell little singer, Mary Small, were on hand again from the former lineup, with Tiny Ruffner serving as emcee. The guest stars booked were Elissa Landi, Ralph Forbes and Jill Esmond, in dramatizations associated with various dates. This gave the show a slightly novel twist. All in all, a satisfying feature, combining as it does, elements of drama, music and a chance to win something for merely having being born on a certain day.
