Period By Jack Mahon Columbia's Lions showed 30,000 fans just how they earned their nickname yesterday when they hurled back charge after charge of a powerful Navy team and battled to a scoreless tie with the Midshipmen at wintry Baker Field. Led by their ace center, Don Snavely, the Lions stopped the Middies' Bill Busik on the six-inch line midway in the third period and fought off several other desperate drives to walk off with ye olde moral triumph if not actual conquest of their more heavily-armed Annapolis rivals. Smashing: over a touchdown In the waning minutes of the final quarter, Iowa's scrappy Hawkeyes knocked Notre Dame from the ranks of the undefeated and untied today with a stunning 7-0 upset Victory before 50,000. After the Irish had hammered their way to Iowa's 1 and 16 yard lines in the last period, the Hawkeyes capitalized on Irish fumbles and pass interceptions to gain possession on the ND 21 with only minutes remaining and promptly battered over a touchdown. Columbia smeared the Middies and Busik kicked out on the Columbia 9. For the next six minutes each running attack was checked by hard-charging lines and Busik and Germann exchanged Ricks. Bill had the better of these. keeping his punts bouncing off the sidelines deep in Lion territory. Navy collected another first down to march to its own 49 on Busik's and Cameron plunging, but a clipping penalty nullified the gain and Busik had to kick to the Columbia 24.

The Navy line was too much for the Lions again and Germarm kicked to the Navy 13. Busik picked up five on an off-tackle smash as the period ended. Score: Columbia 0, Navy 0. SECOND PERIOD Columbia's running attack couldn't get going, and with the Middies' second squad going into action they put on their first sustained drive. Starting on their 38, with Werner ripping large chunks of "lardage off on slanting thrusts through the Blue left side.

Georgtown punted, O'Rouike fair-catching on his 34. O'Rourke passed to Maznicki for 157then to Toczylowski for 11 and a first down on the Georgtown 40. A double lateral, O'Rourke to Maznicki to Zabilski, developed into an end around with Zabilski going to the 39. THIRD PERIOD Georgetown took the kickoff and marched down the field for a touch- down. On the second play BC's niiiuvait a pass uui fumbled and Georgetown recovered on its 35. Castiglia exploded through tackle to midfield. Then two plunges and -a Koshlap to Kopcik pass brought it to the 33 where Koshlap slipped inside guard and went 21 yards to the 12. Two plunges and an offside against BC made it first down on the 5.

On a double pass behind the line, Koshlap to Ghecas to McFadden, McFadden went over. The kick was wide. There was no stopping BC. O'Rourke returned the kickoff to the 33, and down the field the Eagles marched. O'Rouike hit (Continued on page 100, col.

iur a nrst FIRST PERIOD Georgetown scored in the first few minutes when Augie Lio, 210-pound guard, booted a field goal from tha 32. Georgetown's opening kickoff went to the end zone. On third down, O'Rourke punted, Ghecas returning to the BC 33. Two plunges picked up only a yard but a pass clicked to the 24. With McFadden holding on the 32, Lio did his stuff.

Georgetown scored a touchdown a few ntmitea later. Fullilove blocked O'Rourke'a quick kick, the ball going outside on the BC 10. Ghecas hit tackle for one. Koshlap passed to McFadden who was knocked out of bounds on the V-i marker. Koshlap smacked for the touchdown and Lio converted.

Then it was EC's turn. They returned the kickoff to their 28 and marched 72 yarda to a touchdown in six plays. O'Rourke hit tackle for one and then flipped a 25-yard pas3 to Toczylowski for a first down on the Georgetown 4G. A lateral, O'Rourke to Toczylowski, went for 9 and Holovak ploughed to a first down on the 21. O'Rourke lateraled to Montgomery who passed to Woronicz in the end zone.

Georgetown center, wa3 coveting the pass but batted the ball into Woronicz's hands. Maz-nicki missed the extra point. BC started rolling again. From his 10, O'Rourke skipped 30 yards. Then he passed to Maznicki who was downed by Georgetown's safety man, Ghecas, after a 32-yard gain.
